Get diagnosed by spitting on an iPhone, social graces terminal
Korean scientists reckon that the capacitive touchscreens on our phones and tablets could help diagnose diseases from what’s floating around in your mouth. It works through the screen’s ability to detect minute capacitive differences in disease-carrying liquids placed on its surface. Experiments by Hyun Gyu Park and Byoung Yeon Won at the Korea Advanced Institute for Science and Technology in Daejeon managed to detect chlamydia microbes in three different concentrations. Once again , the iPhone acted as medical chief, although the setup isn’t yet able to distinguish between different bugs. There are also teething troubles with the touchscreen, as capacitive read-outs can be affected by moisture and sweat that are on the screen alongside your ‘sample.’ One solution to this would be to create a disposable film that attaches to the iPhone surface. There’s a second reason for this, as Park diplomatically puts it: “Nobody wants direct application of bio-samples onto their phone.” Let’s hope Siri doesn’t take it personally. Get Where’s my Water free from Apple’s Facebook page
Apple is apparently giving yet another popular game away using its Facebook page — this time, it’s Disney’s Where’s my Water up for grabs. To grab your free copy of the great water-guiding physics puzzler, just head over to Apple’s App Store Facebook page , become a fan, and you’ll get a free promo code to download the game on an iOS device of your choice. It’s a great title (put together, as we’ve previously reported, by a former game tester at the House of Mouse ), and obviously much better at the low price of completely free. This is still such a weird promotion, though — Apple has traditionally not had the best relationship with Facebook, but they have given away apps using Facebook before . Cupertino has a perfectly good Twitter account that could also be used to give away free games, but the Facebook freebies appear to use a slightly different method than posting promo codes. Don’t forget Apple also has the Ping social network that could probably use a little traffic (and, you know, already happens to be connected up in iTunes). Acer’s 27-inch HR274H monitor promises to do 2D-to-3D conversion on the fly
It likely won’t win over anyone who isn’t too fond of 3D to begin with, but those looking for some additional quasi-3D content beyond the standard fare now have a new option to consider in the form of Acer’s 27-inch HR274H monitor. It not only includes a set of passive, polarized 3D glasses, but what Acer describes as its own “chip-based solution” that promises to convert all 2D content to 3D in real time (it can be switched on and off on the monitor itself). Unfortunately, there’s no word yet as to how well the effect works, and the monitor’s specs are otherwise decidedly ordinary for the rather high $599 price tag — you’ll just get a TN panel with a standard 1920 x 1080 resolution. Additional details can be found in the press release after the break. Apple retail to mark World AIDS Day by spotlighting PRODUCT (RED)
According to ifoAppleStore.com , Apple will be spotlighting (PRODUCT) RED items in its stores on December 1 to mark World AIDS Day . A percentage of proceeds from the (PRODUCT) RED line, which Apple launched in 2006 , is donated to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Sources indicate that Apple Store employees will be wearing and/or promoting the red iPod nano, and employees carrying iPads will have red Smart Covers on them. Apple is also expected to promote its RED iTunes gift card and a set of Beats by Dre headphones that are also part of the RED initiative. At the same time, Mophie is also launching a line of RED products , including a new version of the red Juice Pack Air which has been available for some time now. As of this writing Apple is already promoting the red Smart Cover on its website; clicking links to buy the Smart Cover took me directly to the page for the (PRODUCT) RED version. Apple has stated that “(PRODUCT) RED has generated more than $170 million for the Global Fund” since its 2006 introduction, and “up to 50 percent of gross profits” from (PRODUCT) RED sales go to the Global Fund. Nokia Siemens Networks looks to unload WiMax division onto NewNet Communication
WiMax expansion isn’t exactly all the rage as of late, and so it comes as no surprise that Nokia Siemens Networks is shedding itself of the extraneous baggage. Following its recent whopping round of layoffs , the move is a continuation of the company’s efforts to bring stability to its bottom line. NewNet Communication Technologies has agreed to bring the castoff WiMax technologies into its fold, along with approximately 300 NSN employees — all for an undisclosed price — in a deal that’s expected to be finalized before year’s end. A full press release follows the break. 3D-printed bone replacements coming soon to an orthopedic surgeon near you, courtesy of WSU (video)
3D printers are slowly, but surely working their way into all sorts of useful, everyday applications — like the creation of chocolates , flutes and even Mario Kart turtle shell racers . Now, Washington State University engineers are unveiling a unique implementation of the tech that could aid in the regrowth of damaged or diseased bones. Utilizing a ceramic compound, the group’s optimized ProMetal 3D printer builds dissolvable scaffolds coated with a plastic binding agent that serve as a blueprint for tissue growth. The team’s already logged four long years fine tuning the process, having already achieved positive results testing on rats and rabbits, but it appears there’s still a ways to go — about 10 -12 years, according to the project’s co-author Susmita Bose — before orthopedic and dental surgeons can begin offering “printed” bone replacements. With a synthetic windpipe already under medical science’s belt and now this, it’s looking like we’re just a few short decades away from that long sought after full body replacement. Right, Mr. Lagerfeld ? Click on past the break for a brief look at this osteo-friendly machinery. Jawbone UP: Worth the money — a review
The Jawbone UP is a slick little piece of sexy. Regularly $100, for Black Friday they were $78 at the Apple Store, a deal I just couldn’t pass up. A little self-checkout magic while waiting for the Genius Bar, and boom. Time to start playing. First Impressions The packaging is rather inventive. I asked an Apple Store employee if they had a sizing band for it, and he pointed out to me that they’re built right into the box, which is both handy, and very accurate. The UP is currently available in 3 sizes, Small, Medium and Large, with an Extra Large forthcoming. The size guide for the large was a little snug, but I was told that as long as the plastic doesn’t have to bend on the size guide, you should be fine. This proved accurate, my wristband is perfectly snug and doesn’t bounce around or slide. Downloading the app was quick, and setup was intuitive, guiding me through a quick setup process for a Jawbone.com account and registering my wristband. After a quick walkthrough of the settings, I walked out sporting my flashy new bracelet. Counting My Steps The feature that I thought would be the most useful was the pedometer, and the activity reminder, making sure I get up and move around every so often during my day, since I work at a desk. A boring, sitting down desk. The app sets a goal for you of 5,000 steps per day, a modest goal, easily achievable. It tracks the percentage you’ve done through the day, and allows you to set an “Activity Reminder,” which, as I mentioned, causes the pretty little rubber bracelet to vibrate a certain time after I’ve become a little… stagnant. Its initial setting is disabled, and has the option of 1-4 hours + 0, 15, 30 and 45 minute intervals. I have mine set for one hour, enough to bug me to get off my butt, but not so annoying that I want to break the little guy in half. Watching Me Sleep I must admit, I was the most excited about the sleep tracking feature, and the silent alarm. I didn’t think it would be terribly useful, considering that I’m a ridiculously heavy sleeper. I’d also tried a couple of apps in the App Store that say they can track your sleep based on accelerometer readings in the iPhone, but I wasn’t too happy with the results, and I figured UP wouldn’t do much better. How wrong I was. The silent alarm is genius. It picks the perfect moment in a half-hour time window where you’re at your lightest sleep and lulls you right out of it with a gentle vibration pattern. The brilliant part is that when I follow its advice and plan to get about 7 hours of sleep, it wakes me right up. If my mother knew the best alarm clock I’d ever use was silent, I’m sure her hearing would be a little better today. The sleep tracking is also really insightful. Last night I was in bed for almost 8 hours, but apparently I only slept for about 5.5 of those hours, which would explain why I’m so dog tired today. Stalking The Foodstuffs I’ve never been the calorie counting type, so limited as the UP’s food tracking capabilities may be, I love the simplicity that comes hand-in-hand with it, even if there are few caveats. Sitting down for lunch? All Jawbone asks is that you snap a picture of it, give it a name and tag it with a place. 2 hours later, you’ll get a notification asking for “feedback on a meal.” These simple statistics are surprisingly insightful. By asking “how you feel” after you eat, and creating a sort of health journal, it’s helped me connect the dots between my diet one day, and how I feel the next morning. Suddenly it’s much easier to see the hangover I get from a midnight snack—read: a full platter of SUPER NACHOS from Gual Berto’s. What’s Macgasmic Well, as I said before, the hardware is DANG SEXY. The simple interface with the wristband’s single button and headphone jack connector is really cool. It’s just obtrusive enough to get the occasional, “wait, what’s that thing?” All the while it remains minimalist and stays out of the way, even under a jacket’s sleeve or a long-sleeved shirt. The button, used to toggle the tracking mode between workout, sleep and normal, is super easy to use, and the single indicator light is only visible when you need it. Sleek, smooth and decently fashionable. The app tracks food through photos, but it keeps those photos out of your Camera Roll, and thereby out of your Photo Stream, a huge plus, but it’s probably the only thing I really like a lot about the app. It has really neat visualizations of the data it’s collected, but, to be honest, it seems like that that’s all they spent a lot of time on, leading us to… What’s Not The APP! Okay, I’m being a little harsh. The app does what it says it does, but that’s pretty much it. It logs steps and food and sleep, but if you don’t fit that into their usage pattern, it doesn’t work. There’s no way to add a meal without a photo. There’s also no way to log a workout that didn’t cover any distance on the GPS, or steps on the wristband. This is particuloarly suckish for me, because most of my workouts consist of free weights and stationary bike. There’s no way to repeat a meal in the app, with or without a photo, so you can’t reuse the photos that don’t get put in your Camera Roll. Since my breakfast is almost always a chocolate protein shake from Costco, this really gets under my nerves. There’s also no external sharing, but I can’t decide if the ability to clog my friends’ news feeds on Facebook with all the pictures of my new healthy lifestyle would actually be a useful feature, so I’m remaining neutral on that ground. There’s no obvious way to change the settings on the wristband, or check on it. The battery level is only displayed immediately after sync, and if you want to change the alarm time or activity monitor settings, you have to tap the + sign and use the same interface used to add meals and other activities. If unintuitive were an Olympic sport, that right there would be a medal contender. So, Jawbone, if someone over there ends up reading this, here’s my wishlist. Re-post or re-use a previous photos of a meal Let me log biking/weightlifting time as a workout so I don’t look like such a lazy bum in the workout section Some (very limited) external sharing is merited, at least. Make the alarm a little more flexible (a weekend setting) Give me a blasted “Wristband Settings”type tab or screen Make goals more prevalent and easier to set All in all, I really like the Jawbone UP, both in concept and in practice. The app needs some work, but it’s nothing they can’t fix, as long as they don’t consider it “done.” In my opinion, it was well worth the $78 I paid for it, and worth the $99 it’s going for now. With continued updates to the app, and social integration with more than just Jawbone’s own graph, the UP has the potential to live up to its motto, and help you find the “Healthier You.” It’s too bad it can’t vibrate the next time I feel tempted to get extra jalepeños on my nachos… Macgasm – Apple Tips, Apple News, Apple Everything. South Korea creates speedy new UAV, gives it VTOL capabilities to boot
In the never-ending quest to give our future robot overlords better tools with which to enslave us, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has built what it claims to be the fastest UAV on the planet. Checking in at five meters (16.4 feet) long with a seven meter (23 foot) wingspan, the as-yet unnamed aircraft can cruise at 400km/h (249mph). Speed’s not its only standout feature either, as the Korean UAV can perform vertical takeoffs and landings ( VTOL ) as well. Its VTOL capability comes courtesy of dual tilt-rotors that provide helicopter-style takeoffs with fixed wing speeds once airborne. It joins the US Marines famed V-22 Osprey as the second such aircraft on earth and is the first unmanned aircraft packing the technology. The craft is still in the developmental stages, though Korean officials claim it’ll be ready for primetime in March 2012, with mass production less than three years away. How much will this fast and flexible flying machine cost? Well, that depends how many are built, but it’s a safe bet its considerable capabilities won’t come cheap. TUAW TV Live: Open mics on the last day of November
Did this month just fly by or what? Just 35 days ago I was doing a live review of the “new” iPhone 4S, and now all of us are used to talking to Siri. It’s also hard to believe that in just a few weeks, TUAW TV Live marks its second anniversary of weekly idiocy. Time flies, and so will today’s show as I open the microphones to TUAW TV Live regulars. I’ll provide my Skype address to folks in the chat room, and if you’d like to pontificate about a topic for 5 – 10 minutes, you’ll have the chance. Just keep it on topic — i.e., Apple-related — and you’ll be fine! Below, you’ll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. If you’re driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you’re stuck in traffic, please don’t — keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream App . It’s a universal app and is wonderful on an iPad, both for viewing and participating in the chat. We’ll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you’re seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. For those of you who are not able to join us for the live edition, you’ll be able to view it later this evening on our TUAW Video YouTube channel and as part of the TUAW TV Live podcast viewable in iTunes or on any of your Apple devices.
