Reflection app goes live, brings iOS screen mirroring to your Mac
Ever wanted to use AirPlay mirroring to show the screen of your iPad 2 or iPhone 4/ 4S on your Mac? Just released, Reflection ($14.99 for a single license, $39.99 for a 5 pack) offers a well-featured mirroring receiver for OS X, ideal for education and demos — and a great way to eliminate the Frankencable for iPad video capture. I’ve been beta-testing Reflection for several weeks. I watched as David Stanfill (developer of AirParrot , which I introduced a few weeks ago on TUAW ) refined and stabilized this app. With Reflection, you can project app demos to your Mac in real time. This is a great feature for any developer or teacher, or even for business folk who would like to bring along their presentations on their phone. I first wrote about Reflection a few weeks back on TUAW , and it received quite the warm welcome — many of our readers asked when it would debut, and how they could purchase a copy. At that point, the app was just in its initial alpha release. It barely supported multiple resolutions and provided few options. What you get today is full mirroring, including audio, with orientation updates and many video optimization features as well as pseudo-frames that make the video on your desktop look as if it’s running on an iPhone or iPad — just as it would with the Xcode iOS simulator. It’s not quite at a bulletproof release, but for day-to-day use for those of you who need these features now and are willing to deal with the occasional crash, it’s a great solution as-is. AirParrot ($9.99 for a single license, $29.99 for a 5 pack), the app that mirrors your OS X desktop to Apple TV, has also undergone major changes since I first wrote it up. In the latest release (approximately version 1.2.1), you can now use your Apple TV as an separate external monitor, not just for mirroring desktops. AirParrot also now supports audio mirroring and perceptual smoothing. These are great feature bumps to an already useful app. Correction: only the iPhone 4S is supported for mirroring, not the iPhone 4. iRobot reorganizes, forms new unit focused on Ava and other emerging technologies
iRobot has been branching out from its traditional household and military robots for quite a while, and it looks like it’s now officially embracing those activities as a core part of its business. The company announced a reorganization (or “strategic realignment”) today that will see it comprised of three different business units: Home Robots, Military Robots and Emerging Technologies. That last group includes things like the Ava mobile robotics platform, which iRobot hopes will eventually be used in everything from healthcare to retail to security applications. Alongside that news, the company also announced a bit of an exec shakeup, with Home Robots President Jeffrey Beck being named Chief Operating Officer, and former COO Joseph Dyer switching roles to become Chief Strategy Officer. The company’s official announcement can be found after the break. Lytro pre-orders start shipping, infinite focusing now within reach
Those of you that scurried to get an early spot in the pre-order cue for Lytro’s upcoming camera , ought to carefully skim your inboxes for an email confirming shipment of your infinite focusing shooter. Per a ton of tips from you, in addition to a post from the company’s official blog, early orders of the unconventionally shaped camera that allows you to refocus after the fact are now en route to abodes stateside. When we played with it at its launch event , we came away impressed, yet ultimately longed for the underlying technology to be licensed to others — something the company maintains it’s actively exploring . No matter, with a unit in hand, look for our full review in the coming days. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Continue reading Lytro pre-orders start shipping, infinite focusing now within reach Lytro pre-orders start shipping, infinite focusing now within reach originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 18:08:00 EDT. Mini quadrotors play Bond, James Bond (video)
This week’s TED2012 conference isn’t all talk — sometimes the videos features speak for themselves. Check out this phenomenal one from the University of Pennsylvania starring a number of nano quadrotors playing the James Bond theme by banging percussion, hitting the piano and strumming a guitar. The room in the video has infrared lights and cameras and the ‘copters are outfitted with reflectors, making it possible to plot their position. The result is technical wizardry worthy of Q himself. Check it out after the break. Microids and Anuman Interactive bring Barbarian – The Death Sword to iOS, coming to Mac this March
Retro developer Microids has teamed up with Anuman Interactive to bring the 1987 classic Barbarian – The Ultimate Warrior to the iOS and Windows platforms. MLB at Bat 2012 app out for iDevices and Android, brings in-app monthly subscriptions to iOS
It’s that time of year when the hot stove league gives way to spring training, and people start talking less about things like El Hombre’s move to LA and more about batting averages and home runs. Thus, MLB has unleashed the MLB At Bat 2012 app to keep you up to date on your favorite squads and stars, and unlike previous iOS iterations, this time it’s free. That gratis version gives users limited info (scores, standings, news, and team content), but those willing to drop $14.99 get full access for the year, which includes audio game casts, live game video look-ins and the game of the day. Additionally, there’s a $2.99 monthly subscription option if you find forking over for the full season distasteful. Unlike the iOS version, Android users currently only have the $14.99 option, though the same interface is present in both apps to provide a consistent UX. Subscribers of MLB.tv get all of what At Bat 2012 has to offer for free, with Android users gaining access through the existing At Bat Lite app. Sound good? Head on down to the source and get your download on. You’re the Pundit: Will Apple ditch the iPad home button?
When it comes to forecasting the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust . We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today’s topic is the iPad. Apple’s intriguing invite for next week’s iPad event seems to be missing a home button. As the biggest mechanical element on iOS devices, some have long felt that the button was a harsh intrusion of device engineering into an otherwise flawless touch-based system. Could Apple have re-engineered its button for better ergonomics, flipping the iPad to deliberately hide it? Or is the button gone for good? You tell us. Place your vote in this poll and then join in the comments with all your predictions.
