Hidden settings show Apple tested additional gesture, folder enhancements for iOS 7

Screenshots via  Hamza Sood In addition to the several new user-facing features introduced by Apple for iOS 7, hidden settings inside the new system have revealed that Apple has been testing other new enhancements. Hamza Sood  discovered the hidden settings options, and these toggles reveal additional gesture, multitasking, and folders options. The settings are not readily available to users of the iOS 7 beta, but acces requires some unspecified tweaking. Notably, Apple is testing system-wide edge-swipe and corner-swipe gestures for iOS 7. These gestures would bolster the already present edge-swipe feature in iOS 7 for Messages, Safari, and a couple of the other pre-installed iOS apps. According to these settings, Apple’s testing of these gestures would expand to being used for quick-app-switching. Video and more details below: Video by Hamza Sood In terms of new functionality being tested, the ability to hide pre-installed apps (a feature that many users have been requesting) is present in these settings. The ability to create a new folder inside of a folder is also present. This function would seem more important in the old folders implementation as iOS 7′s folders system allows for multiple pages of apps to be stored inside of each folder. The option to pinch to close folders is also present in these settings. Screenshots via Hamza Sood Other hidden settings are present for tweaking blur effects, coloring, and animation speeds. Because these are hidden settings, it is likely that these functions will not appear in future public version of iOS 7. These options will likely remain internal to Apple. Nonetheless, it is intriguing to see what Apple has tested (or is still testing) for its first major iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch OS redesign. Continue reading

Video hands-on: iTunes Radio, Mavericks display integration for Apple TV

When iOS 7 launches later this year, Apple’s upcoming iTunes Radio service will not only be found on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but on the Apple TV set-top-box as well. As we previously highlighted , the Pandora-competing streaming music service is available for testing on iOS 7 devices, but today, we have filmed a hands-on video of the iTunes Radio implementation for the corresponding fall Apple TV software update… As you can see in the video above, iTunes Radio is available as a standalone app on the Apple TV interface. Like on iOS 7 devices, iTunes Radio for Apple TV includes a series of stations compiled by Apple. Additionally, users can create custom stations based on specified artists, genres, or specific song titles. The menus are akin to those for other Apple TV apps such as the standard Music player. The ability to purchase songs through iTunes and listen to music in the background is also present. iTunes Radio is currently exclusive to users in the United States, but we previously published a workaround for international music fans.  In addition to iTunes Radio, the upcoming Apple TV software update will work with OS X Mavericks to be a wireless standalone display. In past OS X and Apple TV versions, functionality capped at the ability to AirPlay Mirror a Mac’s screen to a display connected to an Apple TV set-top-box. iTunes Radio, this fall, will also be available on Macs and PCs via an iTunes update. Dragon Mobile Assistant 4 for Android adds driving mode, voice notifications

For Nuance, it’s not enough that Dragon Mobile Assistant spares Android users from pecking at the keyboard — with the app’s new 4.0 upgrade, those users can sometimes avoid contact altogether. Dragon Mobile Assistant can now detect when you’re in a moving car and automatically invoke a Driver Mode that relies solely on voice recognition and feedback, keeping your focus on the road. Accordingly, the upgrade builds in spoken notifications for inbound calls, messages, upcoming meetings and Facebook updates. There’s also voice-aware email and customizable wake up commands. All told, 4.0 is a big boost for Android fans who see touchscreens as old hat; if you do, you can grab the update shortly (if not already) through Google Play. Why Was Apple Late To The PRISM Party?

If there’s one striking thing about those PRISM slides, other than their hideous aesthetics, it’s that Apple’s allocated yellow oval, instead of a date, has the words “(added Oct 2012)” underneath it. That difference is most striking when you consider the fact that Apple competitor Microsoft cooperated with the government a full five years earlier. The company, which denies ever having heard of PRISM, released its FISA request numbers today, starting on December 1st, 2012, through this May 2013. Though it’s plausible that the government would not have disclosed the name of the program, the NYT confirmed Apple’s participation in a government surveillance network designed to make data collection more efficient for the NSA — whatever that entails, like “a broad sweep for intelligence, like logs of certain search terms.” From Claire Cain Miller’s article : While handing over data in response to a legitimate FISA request is a legal requirement, making it easier for the government to get the information is not, which is why Twitter could decline to do so. The October 2012 date is notable as coming a year after the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Perhaps, because it is an interesting coincidence, it’s led to speculation that Steve Jobs resisted systematic data collection from the NSA until his death. That statement was echoed on the record by NeXt developer Andrew Stone, who told Cult of Mac, “Steve Jobs would’ve rather died than give into that, even though he had a lot of friends at the NSA. Microsoft caved in first, then everyone else. Steve would’ve just never done it.” The speculation, which I’ve heard from a couple of sources, has grounds. NeXT was publicly a vendor for the NSA and many other security agencies, and Jobs had many contacts at the agency who perhaps had offered him immunity. It could be that his connections, Apple’s brand popularity or straight-up his legend allowed him to escape Microsoft’s, which had been embroiled in a series of antitrust cases up until then, or Yahoo’s fates. All of these explanations make sense, though it could be something like the Twitter loophole that caused Apple’s tardiness. In Twitter’s case most of its data is public, so it’s not that big of a loss to the NSA until it becomes more of a communication node. Perhaps only recently did Apple collect the kinds of data the government would want, like the meta data around iMessage, which, though encrypted, doesn’t pass the “pud muddle” test. We will likely never know what Jobs did in those last few years as PRISM loomed ever larger, but whatever he did it looks like he held out as long as he could. The image of Steve Jobs playing chicken with Uncle Sam fits right into his myth. Even if it is just a myth. Continue reading

Automattic buys third-party WordPress app Poster to improve its own mobile apps

Automattic , the company behind Wordpress, has purchased the iOS Wordpress client Poster . Developer Tom Witkin is joining Wordpress’ mobile team with the aim of bringing his app’s unique features to Wordpress’ own app. Sadly, progress for Wordpress means Poster is no longer available in the app store, but there’s a bright spot for those who’ve already picked it up. Users who already own the app will be able to re-download it from their accounts and Witkin has announced that he will continue to provide support. Poster brought a number of features not found in the company’s own apps to Wordpress users, including Dropbox integration for importing articles from the cloud, support for Markdown and the ability to choose your own URL slug for posts. While it’s sad to see Poster leave the App Store, it’s nice to know Wordpress’ own apps will most likely be seeing these improvements in the future. Jony Ive’s title flattened to ‘Senior VP, Design’ alongside iOS 7 revamp

To go along with his complete redesign of iOS , Jony Ive’s official executive title at Apple has been flattened to drop the word “Industrial.” The change is notable as this new title plants Ive’s position as being where the buck stops for the design of all of Apple’s products… Ive’s former position as chief of hardware design was expanded to provide “leadership and direction” for Apple’s interface teams last fall in tandem with Scott Forstall leaving Apple . However, the official change in title only occurred last week: the week in which the flatter, newly colored iOS 7 was revealed for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch . Previous title: Continue reading

Digg Reader beta launching next week on iOS

With the impending doom of Google Reader just around the corner on July 1, RSS fans have been searching for an alternative to their beloved feed. Digg has heard their cries, and will be launching the first public beta of its new Reader replacement , called Digg Reader, next week. The beta will slowly roll out at first, but Digg promises it will be available to everyone by June 26. Digg has made it clear the service will become a freemium product, akin to services like Evernote which provide free services with extra paid options available to those willing to pay. However, all of the features available during the free beta will remain part of the free version of the reader in the future. Digg Reader will come with migration tools to help you move your feeds from Google Reader. In addition, Digg promises the core product will feature mobile apps that sync with your Reader web page, a clean layout that focuses on article content and support for subscribing, sharing, saving and organizing. The mobile beta will launch on Digg’s iOS app, with Android support coming in the 60 days following launch. Other upcoming features include integration of third-party services like Buffer and Evernote and improved sorting and filtering of feeds, notifications and search.
