Opera for Android drops the beta, available on the Play store now

If your ears perked up when you heard about Opera for Android going WebKit , but were holding out for the final, non-beta version, then that wait is over. More recent features of the browser include the option to toggle the nav-bar location, text-wrapping when zooming and a full screen view of active tabs, but beyond that, the “what’s new” section on the download page isn’t saying much. So, while it’s mostly the Opera we saw back at MWC , tools such as off-road mode (for data compressing) and a discovery mode are finally set for primetime. Ready to let Opera take the stage on your Android? Get your tickets at the source. Filed under: Cellphones , Internet , Mobile Comments Via: Phone Arena Source: Google Play Continue reading

Samsung’s Wallet app launches in Korea

Samsung showed off its Wallet app to developers earlier this year , and now Korean customers can download it onto compatible Android devices from the company’s own app market. Currently it only appears to collect credit card info, which customers can then use to pay for goods and services at online merchants, verified by a one-time password or PIN. Clearly aimed at both Google Wallet and Apple’s Passbook , Samsung plans to add a few features we’ve seen in Passbook that will make tickets, membership cards and coupons accessible all in one place. According to the translated press release it’s out for the Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy S II HD LTE, although whether it will be featured in a Gangnam Style 2 video remains unknown. Update : Commenter Chris posted a pic showing that the app is also live in the US Samsung Apps market, although it looks a bit different and lists more of the Passbook features we were expecting. This may be explained by a post on the Samsung Wallet Partners site, indicating it launched in open beta on the 18th, with support for transportation tickets, membership cards, coupons and event tickets. Wherever you are, if you have one of the devices listed, it may be worth taking a peek at Samsung’s app store to see what’s waiting inside. Free VIEW Magazine is filled with intriguing photography

View Magazine is a nicely put-together coffee table ebook for the iPad or iPhone that contains photos that are interesting and certainly not run-of-the-mill sunsets and flowers. A variety of photographers have combined to submit some of their favorite work, and they offer some commentary about the images. There are shots of urban landscapes, people, and nature images, but none are what I would call the standard ‘pretty pictures’. That said, the images are striking, and the thoughts behind the images are often illuminating. You won’t like everything you see, but there is plenty to choose from. VIEW Magazine used to require a paid subscription, but it has just gone free, and you can manually download an issue or set it up for automatic downloading to Apple’s Newsstand app. I found the content stimulating and interesting. Any image can be shared to Facebook or via email. You scroll horizontally to move form article to article, and scroll vertically to explore the content within an article. Bookmarks are available if you find something you want to refer to again. Gallery: VIEW Magazine for iOS VIEW Magazine is a pretty hefty download; the current issue is about 250 megabytes. The app allows you to save or discard issues, so if you start filling your iOS device you can always dump past issues. VIEW Magazine is universal, but really isn’t as effective on an iPhone as it is on the iPad. The newest version supports the Retina display on newer iPads, and the app requires iOS 5 or later. VIEW Magazine is a worthy download, and I think you may find it enjoyable and thought provoking. Vudu Player update allows movie downloads on iPhone, iPad

Coming months after the feature’s introduction on Android and PCs , Vudu has updated the iOS version of its app with the ability to download movies for viewing offline. Unlike the Android version, this feature is not restricted to tablets however, with downloads of your Vudu / Ultraviolet collection on iPads and iPhones. Other tweaks include making the Player “easier to use” and adding closed captions on iPhone. The Flixster app already allowed for Ultraviolet movie downloads on iOS, however Vudu has access to some movies that may not be available there. The updated version of the free app is available on on iTunes, although you will need an associated account (with updated password info ) with unlocked videos to get any use out of it. AT&T to enable FaceTime over cellular for all customers by end of 2013

In a statement provided to The Verge , AT&T has indicated that all iPhone subscribers will be able to use FaceTime via a cellular connection by the end of 2013. For video chat apps that come pre-loaded on devices, we currently give all OS and device makers the ability for those apps to work over cellular for our customers who are on Mobile Share or Tiered plans. Apple, Samsung and BlackBerry have chosen to enable this for their pre-loaded video chat apps. And by mid-June, we’ll have enabled those apps over cellular for our unlimited plan customers who have LTE devices from those three manufacturers. Throughout the second half of this year, we plan to enable pre-loaded video chat apps over cellular for all our customers, regardless of data plan or device; that work is expected to be complete by year end. Today, all of our customers can use any mobile video chat app that they download from the Internet, such as Skype. AT&T, if you recall, was initially reluctant to enable FaceTime over cellular connection due to bandwidth concerns. Slowly but surely, however, Ma Bell has started to come around. This past January, AT&T announced that it was enabling FaceTime over cellular to subscribers of its tiered data plans. Now, with its most recent announcement, iPhone users on AT&T who have grandfathered-in unlimited data plans will also be able to FaceTime to their hearts content. 9to5Mac adds thats FaceTime over cellular has already been turned on for some iPhone users. Wacom releases Bamboo Loop photo-sharing digital card app (video)

Wacom’s Bamboo line of products have always been far more whimsical and user-friendly than the rest of its professional offerings, and it’s taken that a step further today with the introduction of the Bamboo Loop digital card app for iOS. Essentially, the app lets you doctor up a photo with graphics and different styles to create a greeting card of sorts that you can ship off to a friend. If you’re on the receiving end of the card, you can scribble on it and “loop” it back to the sender — sort of like a digital version of passing notes back and forth in class. Of course, you’re free to upload your cards to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Instagram too if you feel like sharing them with the world. The app itself is free, though you can cough up an extra $2 if you want to get additional style packs. It runs on iOS5 and higher, and you can download it from the iTunes store starting today. As for those on Android, hold tight, because Loop should be available to you as well pretty soon. Filed under: Software , Mobile Comments Source: iTunes , Wacom Continue reading

Tumblr updates iOS app to match redesigned Android interface

Today’s definitely a big day for Tumblr: there’s a refreshed iOS app in the iTunes Store! And, well, a bit of other news , too. But you’ll hear plenty more about that later — for now, it’s all about mobile. The blogging platform just updated its application for iPad and iPhone, adding that “fancy new post type chooser” that recently made its debut on Android. The design tweak enables one-click access to a variety of post tools, letting you submit video, chats, links, quotes, photos and text, with colorful icons to match. It’s yours for the downloading at the source link below. Filed under: Software Comments Via: TechCrunch Source: iTunes Continue reading

Liberator gun made with consumer 3D printer, plastic pistol fires nine shots successfully (video)

Defense Distributed’s plan is to put the power of guns in the hands of every person with access to the internet and a 3D printer. Until now, however, we’d only seen the Liberator pistol built using an expensive industrial-grade printer — despite the fact that the blueprints for gun have been downloaded by thousands of people who don’t have access to such a high-end machine. One of those folks decided to put the Liberator in the hands of the printing proletariat by making it with a consumer-level Lulzbot A0-101 3D printer, a nail and some common screws. This new version, called the Lulz Liberator, differs from the original in that it’s got a rifled barrel and uses metal hardware to hold it together (as opposed to printed plastic pins). Printing it took around two days and used about $25 worth of generic ABS material, and the pistol produced was fired successfully nine times, but its creator claims it could’ve shot more. It’s still a far cry from a Glock or Beretta, of course, as the gun misfired several times, and removing spent shell casings required the use of a hammer. So, it’s not quite ready for prime time, but it’s one more bit of proof that the age of printed pistols is officially upon us. AT&T confirms that all video chat apps will work over cellular by the end of this year

Will video Hangouts launch when you’re on AT&T’s 3G network? Can you FaceTime with a friend over LTE? The carrier’s current video chat support is confusing at best. Following Google’s Hangouts app launch last week, we attempted to try out the Android version over AT&T’s HSPA network. After hitting connect, a message popped up instructing us to hop over to WiFi in order to complete the call. The carrier followed up by suggesting that Google was to blame — as the software was a replacement for a native Android app, it was up to Mountain View to flip the switch. Now, by the end of this year, AT&T has pledged to support all video chat apps, regardless of which device you own, what you pay in fees or whether or not you downloaded the app yourself. This is good news, no doubt. You can catch AT&T’s statement just below. For video chat apps that come pre-loaded on devices, we currently give all OS and device makers the ability for those apps to work over cellular for our customers who are on Mobile Share or Tiered plans. Apple, Samsung and Blackberry have chosen to enable this for their pre-loaded video chat apps.
