Verizon Cloud service now available on iOS devices

After announcing that it would be rolling out a new Verizon Cloud service to iOS and Android users back in April, the carrier provided an update today informing us that the service is now available to iOS devices and additional Android users. The app, available for free on the App Store here , will allow users to securely back up and access their content in the cloud. Verizon Cloud is now available for iOS devices and additional Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the DROID DNA by HTC… Whether customers are looking to save text messages, call logs, contacts, music, multimedia or other files, Verizon Cloud allows for up to 125 GB of storage. The service will also allow for users to transfer some content from the cloud to multiple devices, including the ability to sync photos and videos, stream music, and access documents. You’ll also be able to backup your computer via a desktop app for Verizon Cloud .  Verizon Cloud comes with 500MB of free storage, but Verizon also has pricing plans including $2.99/month for 25GB, $5.99/month for 75GB, and $9.99/month for the maximum 125GB. Verizon notes, “If you are an existing user of Backup Assistant or Backup Assistant Plus, all your content will automatically transfer over to Verizon Cloud.” Continue reading

Rumor: Cheaper iPhone is being tested in a plethora of colors, will be produced July-September

Credit:  Ferry Passchier Japanese Blog  Macotakara  purports to have some interesting details on the plastic ‘low cost’ iPhone Apple is expected to release later this year. The site says that runs of colors Navy, Gold Orange, White and Gray are in one run of the device and  White, Pink, Green, Blue and Yellow-orange are in another. There is no black model according to the report. Theoretically these models will be tested in small numbers and some might not make the cut, if the report is to be believed. Their source also indicates that the cheaper iPhone will be produced 1,000 units for field test from June, and will be produced during July-September for shipping. If you want to see what these colors might look like head over to our mockup gallery where we tried to cover all of the bases.  Continue reading

Microsoft lies and cheats to portray advantage in tablet ads

Optical illusions? The iPad screen on the left is actually bigger Earlier today Microsoft unleashed its second ad in what appears to be a new campaign focusing on directly comparing iPad to Windows 8 tablets side-by-side– not unlike Apple’s own very successful ‘Get a Mac’ campaign . However, it appears that some of Microsoft’s claims are turning out to be quite inaccurate. To go along with the two videos posted to its YouTube channel and currently running on TV, curi.us ( Via DaringFireball ) points us to a comparison Microsoft has posted on its website pitting iPad against the ASUS VivoTab Smart Windows tablet. In the ad, Microsoft claims that the Windows tablet “has a bigger touchscreen,” but Elliot Temple from curi.us breaks down why it just isn’t true: The iPad screen is 7.76 by 5.82 inches. The ASUS screen is 8.8 by 4.95 inches. ASUS is larger in one direction but smaller in the other direction, and has 3.55% less area than the iPad, not 36% more as Microsoft depicts.  How can the screen with a larger diagonal measurement be smaller? Because it’s a different shape. Long and thin gets you a bigger diagonal but a smaller screen, for the same diagonal inches. While Microsoft might not have all its facts straight on display size, it using the fact it still hasn’t delivered an Office app for iOS as major part of its new campaign… It’s clear from the comparison and new ads that Microsoft is hoping the ability to run Office will be a serious differentiator for its Windows tablets, which could be giving the company even more reason to hold back the long rumored Office apps for iOS. Last we heard, Office support for iOS was on the roadmap for mid next year , but Microsoft is clearly hoping lack of Office on iPad will be a big selling point for its latest round of Windows tablets. Both of the commercials Microsoft is currently running feature scenes mocking the lack of Office apps on iPad. The latest ad specifically points out that the Asus VivoTab RT comes with Office , while iPad only has access to the Microsoft OneNote note taking app (as pictured above). The first ad also includes a bit about Office with Microsoft showing PowerPoint running on the Asus tablet next to an iPad 4. Microsoft’s Bill Gates was recently cited as saying iPad users were growing frustrated with software and hardware limitations of the iPad, pointing to keyboards and Office as examples.  Microsoft clearly has big incentive to keep Office from landing on iOS, and I think its latest ads are a pretty good sign we won’t be seeing Office for iPad anytime soon. Parenting Tip: How to control what your child watches on YouTube

My kids are growing up as part of the Internet generation and, as a result, they love watching videos online. Being good Internet citizens, it’s not surprising their favorite videos involve cats doing silly tricks. I would love to let them loose on YouTube to watch their cat videos, but there is an unsavory side to the video website that pops up in searches or YouTube’s suggested videos list. Here are a few tips to help parents control the content that their child views on YouTube, and on the web, in general. Filtering on OS X The quickest and easiest way to make YouTube kid-friendly is to enable Safety Mode . Safety Mode will screen out potentially objectionable content, so children can view YouTube in a web browser without unsavory videos and vulgar comments floating to the top. You can turn on Safety Mode by scrolling to the bottom of any YouTube page and clicking the drop-down menu in the “Safety” section. If you are logged into your YouTube account, you can lock this feature so it is always enabled. If you have multiple browsers, you have to open each browser and repeat this process to make sure Safety Mode is turned on in each one. YouTube warns parents that this feature is not 100% foolproof, and some objectionable content could seep through its filters. If you want an extra layer of security, you can install third-party filtering tools like Safe Eyes from McAfee or Net Nanny . These services cost money, but they filter all the websites that your children visit, not just YouTube. There are browser-based extensions like FoxFilter for FireFox or Blocksi for Chrome that also filter website content. If you use Safari, parents can use the built-in filtering feature that is enabled when you turn on parental controls in OS X. Parents looking for a house-wide filtering solution that works with all devices should look at OpenDNS and its parental control service . OpenDNS routes all your internet traffic through its server and filters that traffic for adult content, social networking sites, video sharing sites and more. You have control over the categories of content that they want to block. Filtering on iOS A growing number of kids are watching videos using an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod touch, and as expected, most of the parental controls you use on the desktop don’t extend to mobile. You can turn on YouTube Safe Search in mobile Safari or in the YouTube app to prevent access to provocative content, but I would rather have precise control over the videos that my kids watch on iOS. Unlike a desktop or laptop, which is easy to see even from across the room, a mobile device can be propped up in a lap and easily hidden from your view. I prefer to impose stricter restrictions than follow my children around the house peering over their shoulder to see what they are watching on the iPad. There are several options to limit YouTube content on an iOS device. You can choose to install an app like iTubeList (iOS Universal, Free with in-app purchase to disable ads), which plays only YouTube playlists. You can setup a playlist with child-friendly videos and then turn your child loose with the iTubeList app. A similar app is KidSafe Tube (iOS Universal, $2.99), which filters YouTube content and allows you to add single videos, playlists, YouTube channels or search results to a blocked content list. An alternative to a dedicated YouTube app is a kid-safe browser like Ranger Browser or Maxthon browser . These apps monitor all web traffic, not just YouTube and have additional features that allow parents to monitor their children’s web usage. Besides limiting access to websites using black lists and white lists, Ranger Browser also saves a browser history and lets you set the time that you child can use the web. Maxthon browser has a kid-friendly UI and uses a safe list that allows you to setup a list of accessible sites. Any content, including advertisements and links, not on your list will be blocked. Jon Stewart rubs Tim Cook’s Senate testimony the wrong way [Video]

You can’t help but laugh at Stewart’s ribbing of the senators’ questioning, but it is pretty clear Apple is pushing for simplicity and is only jumping through the loopholes because they are there. Tim Cook appears very genuine in his hopes for a more simple, fair tax code. In other news, Apple is doubling its lobbying spending. The company spent about $2 million on lobbying last year, up from $180,000 in 1999, records show. This year it is on pace to nearly double last year’s figure. Apple’s lobbying expenditures still pale in comparison with those of Microsoft Corp., which spent $8.1 million in 2012, and Google, which spent $16.5 million, records show. Drive and Calendar search rolling out to all US Gmail accounts

In October Google started a field trial that allowed users to peruse their Drive files and Calendar entries straight from the Gmail search box . Apparently the test was a rousing success, as the company is rolling the feature out to all US accounts, in English. The feature hasn’t changed since it made its debut late last year — simply start typing and your autocomplete results will include your next homebrew meeting, your epic beer inventory spreadsheet as well as emails from family members suggesting you seek help for your new “hobby.” If you don’t have access just yet, be patient, Google says it’ll roll out slowly over the next week. Microsoft hits iPad again, this time about hardware specs, multitasking, printing

Following up on its ad from yesterday claiming that the iPad is not a productivity device , Microsoft has posted a new ad pitting Windows 8 tablets against the iPad. Today’s ad focuses on expressing that Windows 8 tablets are better productivity devices with the full Microsoft Office suite rather than just OneNote and multitasking capibilities. Additionally, the Redmond-based company pits a single ASUS tablet’s weight and thinness against the iPad. Additionally, Microsoft shows how that single ASUS tablet includes an SD card reader, and the company claims that Windows 8 printing is more versatile than Apple’s AirPrint. Thanks, Matthew !
