LG may bring Google TVs to Korea, China soon; seeing ‘good returns’ in the US

While Eric Schmidt’s proclamation that “most” new TVs would have Google TV embedded last year didn’t come true, LG stated today that it’s bringing the platform to more regions soon. The Korea Times reports an unnamed company executive at the KCTA Digital Cable Show stated the platform is yielding good returns, with average sales of 10,000 units per month. He went on to state that LG Electronics would bring Google TVs to Korea later this year — following the integrated IPTV boxes offered by LG Uplus — and China after that. Microsoft is apparently ready to follow Google TV’s lead with HDMI passthrough and TV overlays , we’ll see if it can gain traction at home and overseas before others catch up. Google Interested In Buying Waze, Might Instigate Bidding War

A new report out of Bloomberg states that Google may be looking to buy the popular social navigation app Waze. Sales talks surrounding Waze have been around for several months, with previous rumors stating that Facebook was in negotiations to buy the company. Sources say that Waze is seeking over $1 billion dollars from its buyer to purchase the 40 million user mapping program. It’s reported that a number of large tech companies, including Google, have started coming forward with offers since talks of Facebook buying the company went public. It seems that a bidding war could now be on the horizon, as more big names continue to join the fold. Waze is reportedly still weighing its options, and that it may simply choose to seek another round of venture capital financing from investors. It doesn’t sound like Google or any other company is close to signing a deal just yet; however, Waze would likely be a great acquisition for Google if it is able to lock to it up. Waze’s community features and user-generated map information could significantly help out Google, which is always trying to stay at the top of the mapping game. Continue reading

Report: Yahoo becomes the latest company to place a bid on Hulu

The rumors on the potential sale of Hulu started circulating again a couple of months back. Now, according to AllThingsD, Yahoo is joining other big-name companies (such as Time Warner Cable and DirecTV) in the race to try and acquire the streaming service. Per the always-insightful sources “familiar with the process,” Marissa Mayer & Co. submitted a bid for Hulu just this morning, though there are no details on how much the company is willing to spend on the video site. Something tells us we’ll know more soon enough, but we can say with confidence that Yahoo is starting its holiday shopping really early. Gigabyte introduces BRIX, a customizable mini PC powered by Ivy Bridge CPUs

The mini PC market isn’t exactly a crowded one, but it’s never a bad thing to have options . Well, if you’re into the idea of adding an ultra-compact to your setup, Gigabyte’s just announced its highly customizable BRIX. The palm-sized PC appears to be the very same one we saw back at this year’s CES , but it’s now taken on a more polished, ready-to-hit-shelves look. Gigabyte’s providing interested parties the ability to load this itty-bitty thing with a vast selection of Ivy Bridge chips (Core i3, i5 and i7), plus their own SSD / RAM combo and operating system of choice. Ports-wise, there are two USB 3.0 sockets, HDMI and a Mini DisplayPort — Gigabyte notes it can power up to two displays simultaneously. Naturally, the cost depends on the specs you choose, and the company only goes as far as to say that the BRIX covers “a range” of price points. Apple trolls us with ‘iWatch’ tease in latest iPhone music ad

Here’s an amusing little image for your Friday: the screenshot above is a clip from Apple’s newest “Music Every Day” ad, which was posted on their YouTube channel last night. If you pay attention at around 0:30 in the commercial, you’ll see what would almost appear to be someone wearing a large, wrist-device while listening to music on their iPhone. While obviously Apple wouldn’t leak a real product through their advertisements, we can’t help but think that this is perhaps a subtle troll on Apple’s part. Continue reading

FDA begins cracking down on medical diagnosis apps starting with ‘uChek’ iPhone urinalysis app

Bloomberg reports the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is launching a first of its kind inquiry into medical diagnosis apps starting with the ‘uChek’ urine analysis app from Biosense Technologies. The free app, which is currently still on the App Store , requires users to purchase a kit containing urine test strips that can be visually analyzed with the iPhone’s camera. The problem, according to a letter sent to Biosense from the FDA , is the fact that the test strips have only been cleared for “direct visual reading” and not automated analysis from an application: Please note that though the types of urinalysis dipsticks you reference for use with your application are cleared, they are only cleared when interpreted by direct visual reading.  Since your app allows a mobile phone to analyze the dipsticks, the phone and device as a whole functions as an automated strip reader.  When these dipsticks are read by an automated strip reader, the dipsticks require new clearance as part of the test system.  Therefore, any company intending to promote their device for use in analyzing, reading, and/or interpreting these dipsticks need to obtain clearance for the entire urinalysis test system (i.e., the strip reader and the test strips, as used together). While Biosense plans to work with the FDA to resolve the issue, Bloomberg notes that this is only the start of a broader crack down on apps that claim to diagnose medical conditions: The agency has said it wants stricter rules for apps that directly diagnose or treat conditions, proposing in 2011 to apply similar quality standards as for heart stents, ultrasound machines and other medical devices. “We intend to finalize the guidance this year,” Synim Rivers, an agency spokeswoman, said yesterday in an e-mail. “The FDA has proposed a regulatory approach that limits its immediate oversight to a specific, small subset of mobile medical applications that are medical devices and present the greatest risk to patient safety if they don’t work as intended.” Biosense claims that the uChek app allows them to price their system at “a fraction of other semi-automated urinalysis while providing comparable accuracy,” but does warn that “uChek is intended for use only by or on the recommendation of a qualified healthcare professional.” Continue reading

HP expands Mac-cloning design approach across all of its latest notebooks

Photo: The Verge HP appears to be taking its  If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em  design philosophy to something of an extreme with the new HP Envy notebook. A gallery posted by  The Verge  shows just how closely HP has copied Apple’s MacBook Air designs in almost every respect, from the wedge profile through the chicklet keyboard, trackpad and colors … Take away the logo, and at first glance, you could easily mistake the HP clone for the original. The heading used here by HP even appears to be a shameless admission of the approach: The irony of HP CEO Meg Whitman’s commentary on this made me laugh aloud: Last year, Hewlett-Packard decided to unify the design of every thin and light laptop it sold, applying the same basic curves across every keyboard, touchpad, hinge, lid, and frame. This year, it’s not just thin-and-light laptops getting the treatment: according to company representatives, CEO Meg Whitman has now mandated a unified design language across HP’s entire portfolio of consumer machines. “She took a look at our portfolio and said, ”I don’t know what’s HP.’” She does now know what’s HP, apparently. When she said last year that “Apple taught us that design really matters,” she seemingly meant this rather literally … HP does have form for this. The company last year released the Spectre One desktop . Remind you of anything? Photo: Engadget Even the trackpad and mouse were cloned. HP is not alone in this, of course, as our own Jordan Kahn saw at the IFA in Berlin last year, but it does seem rather more blatant than most. HP’s approach may even go back further, to the HP Touchsmart back in 2011: Which we felt looked kinda familiar … Perhaps HP thought it was just the next logical step after simply stamping its own logo on the back of an iPod: Photo: Wikipedia (That one was legitimate: a deal with Apple dating back to 2004 to sell HP-labelled iPods through its distribution networks.) Sony brings 4K RAW to NEX-FS700 camcorder courtesy of IFR5 add-on

Sony’s FS700 has plenty going for it regardless of its 4K potential, not least in terms of its super slow motion shooting up to 240fps at 1080p. Nevertheless, if 4K it has to be, then a new NEX-IFR5 interface unit will be out in June to make full use of the camera’s big sensor and 3G-SDI output. A couple of things to bear in mind: in addition to this $2,500 interface, you’ll need a recorder like the AXS-R5 (around $6,300 plus extra for cards) to store your weighty 4K rushes on, plus you’ll find that shooting in this mode will limit slow-mo to a four-second bust at 120 fps. Read the PR for further detail on using 2K with the IFR5, as that format allows continuous slow-mo and ought to be less brutal on the budget.
