Jony Ive wins Blue Peter badge, reciprocates with tour of Apple’s Aluminium CNC machines (Video)

. Sir Jony Ive is no stranger to winning accolades  in the United Kingdom,  including Knighthood and what not, but he seems to be taken aback today with the U.K.’s highest children’s award, the Blue Peter badge. That’s all well and good, but you were looking behind Sir Jony, if you are like us, to Apple’s Industrial design workshop that  we’ve seen in videos before . After getting the award, Ive showed the presenter Apple’s pure aluminum CNC machines (that no doubt have crafted lots of current and future Apple products) in the process of making a much bigger version of the award for the BBC. London-born Sir Jonathan is Senior Vice President of Industrial Design for Apple and a life-long Blue Peter fan. When interviewed by presenter Barney Harwood he vividly remembers the makes from the show, and loved that they reused products that you thought were no longer useful. In the special episode, Sir Jonathan reviews several product designs sent in by Blue Peter viewers through a series of video messages from the children behind the designs. On receiving his gold badge, he called the honour “absolutely incredible”. As a mark of honour for the programme, Sir Jonathan and his team made ‘something very special‘, a unique Blue Peter badge crafted from solid aluminium through a 10-hour process, and presented it to Barney in true Blue Peter style saying, “Here’s one that we made earlier.” The gadget special will be screened on the CBBC channel at 10 a.m. on Feb. 16.  More (including where to direct complaints about Flash) at the Beeb. Apple updates KB article warning users of the ‘perils’ of Jailbreaking iOS

Although there doesn’t appear to be much changed from previous versions apart from some reordering, following this week’s release of the evasi0n jailbreak tool Apple has updated its Knowledge Base article on unauthorized modification of iOS devices. The article warns users that jailbreaking can cause numerous issues from shortened battery life, to security vulnerabilities and other common issues. Jailbreaking, as outlined by the EFF , isn’t illegal in the US but Apple says it may refuse to service devices that have been Jailbroken. (The article doesn’t mention hints at secret new products coming up) @ GingerKie for the Weather bug, a package in Cydia will be updated, for the long boot, the untether package will be updated.—   (@pod2g) February 05, 2013 Full statement by Apple: As designed by Apple, iOS and iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch are designed to work together reliably. Unauthorized modifications to iOS (“jailbreaking”) can cause numerous issues to the hacked iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Examples of issues caused by these unauthorized modifications to iOS have included the following: Instability:  Frequent and unexpected crashes of the device, crashes and freezes of built-in apps and third-party apps, and loss of data. Security vulnerabilities:  Security compromises have been introduced by these modifications that could allow hackers to steal personal information, damage the device, attack the wireless network, or introduce malware or viruses. Shortened battery life:  The hacked software has caused an accelerated battery drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on a single battery charge. Unreliable voice and data:  Dropped calls, slow or unreliable data connections, and delayed or inaccurate location data. Disruption of services:  Services such as Visual Voicemail, Weather, and Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device. Additionally, third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have had difficulty receiving notifications or received notifications that were intended for a different hacked device. Other push-based services such as iCloud and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with their respective servers. Inability to apply future software updates:  Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to iOS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iOS update is installed. Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks iOS. It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of iOS is a violation of iOS end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software. Kickfolio lets you embed iOS apps on any webpage, adds iPad support, slashes pricing

A demo of Angry Bots iOS app embedded using Kickfolio Back in December we told you about a service called Kickfolio that would allow developers to demo their iOS apps directly in the browser using a new HTML5-based platform. The service converts a zipped version of an iOS app into a private test page with a completely interactive HTML5 and CSS version of the app. Today the service gets a few updates, including the ability to embed app demos onto any webpage using an iframe. Above and below you’ll find a couple embedded iOS apps that Kickfolio sent over for us to try out. Kickfolio also now supports iPad apps and is making the service much more affordable for all. This is a powerful tool for developers promoting their apps online and one I expect many to take advantage of for providing free demos to potential customers and press on their website. Kickfolio originally had some feedback for users about pricing starting at $50 a month. Good news: today the company slashed the cheapest plan to just $9 a month (that includes 500 embed sessions). Every plan now also includes unlimited apps and the company is  reopening 15-day free trials so everyone will get a chance to try the new features. Another embedded app demo from Kickfolio below: Continue reading

Apple quietly releases firmware for a new Apple TV 3,2

Here’s some incredibly interesting news from today’s iOS   update extravaganza :  Apple today released iOS 6.1 (or, in Apple TV talk, 5.2 ) for an heretofore unknown Apple TV called “Apple TV 3,2″. You can download it here . Apple’s current Apple TV — version 3,1 — was updated to 1080p with a single-core A5 processor in March 2012. On the conservative side, this may just be a new set of chips cobbled together to do the same thing as the current model. On the optimistic/speculative side, this could foreshadow a new hardware product coming up soon-ish. Perhaps one with a large LCD attached? Apple’s addition of Bluetooth today could also signal (ha) that a new Apple TV package would have some sort of Bluetooth keyboard/remote-type of functionality (Siri?). There are already a number of Bluetooth keyboards out there that cater to TV users , but Apple could certainly change the game in this regard. We’re looking into it. Update: Apple is apparently referring to an Apple TV model dubbed “J33I”, as noted by MacRumors . For comparison purposes, the third-generation Apple TV sported the “J33″ codename. So, the “I” could suggest an international variation of the set-top box. Continue reading

The 10 best Bluetooth keyboards for your Apple TV

Last month we discovered the latest Apple TV beta has a new Bluetooth menu that allows users to pair a wireless keyboard to second and third-gen Apple TVs. With Apple’s release of iOS 6.1 to the public today  and an update to Apple T V, you’ll probably be in the market for the right Bluetooth keyboard to occupy a spot next to your already crowded table full of remotes. Below we have put together a few of our favorite compact options that will pair perfectly with your Apple TV.  Compact, handheld keyboards: HiPPiH Pro ultra-foldable keyboard: Apple sells a HiPPiH foldable wireless keyboard on the Apple Online Store for $60. An identical looking model sells on Amazon for $50 and appears to be one of the better compact, foldable keyboards available with strong reviews. Like the iPad keyboards below, you should have no issues pairing with your iPhone and iPad when not using with your Apple TV, and the small, TV controller-like dimensions (12.5″ L x 4″ W x 0.39″ D, 14.4 ounces) should fit in with your table full of remotes. It requires two AAA batteries. Logitech diNovo Mini keyboard: Another compact keyboard that should be right at home with your TV remotes is this thumb-operated, palm-sized mini keyboard from Logitech. It packs in orange and green backlight options, had a directional pad and touchpad, and measures in at just 2.9 x 8.6 x 8.6 inches and 5.9 ounces. A USB port will let you charge its built-in 950 mAH Li-ion batteries for 30 days battery life. The diNovo Mini sells on Amazon for $80. Amazon has a few cheaper options available that have positive reviews including this $5 mini Bluetooth keyboard , and another foldable, backlit keyboard for $30 . Full-sized keyboards:  Logitech Easy-Switch Keyboard:   If you want a truly full-sized keyboard, Logitech makes one of our go-to options with the backlit, easy-switch keyboard that lets you quickly switch between three bluetooth devices such as an iOS device, Mac and, in this case, your Apple TV. It’s available for $99 from Logitech. iPad keyboards: If you’re going to get a keyboard larger than the handheld options above, iPad keyboards will do double duty as a lightweight, compact keyboard for your Apple TV. Here are a few of our favorites: Cygnett KeyPad: Cygnett, a company that makes several iPhone and iPad accessories we’ve enjoyed, has another great option with the high quality but lightweight Cygnett Keypad pictured above in the middle. ZaggKeys PROplus: One of the highest-quality iPad keyboards on the market that we’ve had the pleasure of using is the PROplus from Zagg ($125). It comes with a case for your iPad that will keep the keyboard magnetically attached, but the keyboard by itself provides one of the nicer, iPad-sized keyboards on the market. Zagg also sells its FLEX standalone keyboard for tablets as low as $53 on Amazon . Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover: Zagg’s biggest competition with the PROplus is this ultra thin keyboard from Logitech. It too comes with a cover for iPad that will attach magnetically to the keyboard, which also means it will easily detach to allow you to use the keyboard standalone with your Apple TV. It also sells for slightly less than Zagg’s PROplus at $80 on Amazon.  Solar:  Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard: Another great option and one of our favorite keyboards is Logitech solar products. Sitting in your living room, you should be able to keep a charge for months without ever having to worry, and Logitech sells two sizes: a smaller, compact version for $65 , and a full-sized version that sells on Amazon for $60 . Apple Bluetooth keyboard: Of course Apple’s own Bluetooth keyboard is always an option and a keyboard that many of us at 9to5 use on a daily basis. It doesn’t have USB charging or illuminated keys, but it’s competitively priced with the keyboards above and will get the job done  for $69 on Amazon . Continue reading

Evad3rs dev team teases Super Bowl Sunday jailbreak for iOS 6.1

Hey, did everyone know the Super Bowl is this Sunday? What will you be doing? /cc @ evad3rs evad3rs.com —   (@MuscleNerd) January 28, 2013 @ MikeBeas @ evad3rs yep 6.1 is safe—   (@MuscleNerd) January 28, 2013 In keeping with the tradition of “Sunday is Funday,”  MuscleNerd , front-man for the new Evad3rs jailbreak development team, confirmed on Twitter today that iOS 6.1 has been jailbroken, and he teased that the untethered jailbreak will release on Super Bowl Sunday. The “untethered” status means you can safely reboot your device without having to worry about losing your jailbreak or any of the built-in features, as opposed to a “tethered” jailbreak that requires you to plug your device into a computer and re-run the jailbreaking app anytime you reboot it. The Evad3rs team is made up of jailbreaking veterans, including  MuscleNerd  and  planetbeing  of the original  iPhone Dev Team ,  pimskeks  of the  Chronic Dev Team , and  pod2g , who was responsible for part of the second-generation iPod touch jailbreak and other more recent jailbreaks. The team has worked on the iOS 6.1 beta for months and recently announced that it created a working untethered jailbreak, but were waiting for the impending release of iOS 6.1 to ensure that Apple didn’t have time to fix the security holes they used to hack the devices.
