Hands-on with Maxwest’s $65 7-inch dual-core ICS tablet at CTIA 2013

It’s true that cheap affordable Android tablets are a dime a dozen at most trade shows these days, but here at CTIA 2013 we stumbled upon something that caught our eye — a 7-inch dual-core tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich that costs just $65. The Maxwest TAB-7155DC aka. Ippo Y88 measures 182 x 122 x 10mm (7.16 x 4.8 x 0.39inch), weighs 187g (6.6oz) and comes in several hues (black, white, silver, red, blue and pink). It features a 7-inch 1024 x 600-pixel capacitive multitouch LCD, an Infotmic IMAPx820 SoC (1GHz dual-core Cortex A5 CPU with Mali 400 GPU), 512MB of RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, dual VGA cameras (front and back), WiFi b/g/n and 2800mAh battery. The screen isn’t covered in glass and there’s no sign of any Bluetooth or GPS radios, but then again, what do you expect for $65? You”ll find a power / lock key, DC socket, micro-USB port (with on-the-go support) and mini-HDMI output on the top edge, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack, volume rocker and microSD card slot on the right side. A microphone and speaker round things up in back. The tablet runs a mostly stock version of ICS (Android 4.1.1, to be specific) and includes the usual assortment of Google apps along with access to the Play Store . Performance is adequate — not buttery smooth but perfectly usable. Build quality and materials are surprisingly decent for the price (the plastic is color-though), but the display leaves a lot to be desired (viewing angle are poor and the acrylic covering the screen is scratch-prone). Then again, it’s only $65, right? Check out the gallery below for our rose-colored hands-on with the expensive tablet. AT&T’s Galaxy Note getting Jelly Bean via Kies on May 3rd

After watching its international counterpart make the jump to Jelly Bean, Ma Bell’s version of the original Galaxy Note is finally scheduled to receive its due . Starting on Thursday, Samsung’s Kies servers will begin offering Android 4.1.2 to AT&T customers rocking the smartphone / tablet hybrid. While the update brings a host of new features, the main course is the introduction of Popup capabilities for notes, video and browsing. Surprisingly absent from AT&T’s changelog is a mention of Google Now , which is typically embedded in devices running Jelly Bean. We’ll reach out to the carrier for clarity on this missing item, but in the meantime classic Note owners, prepare to bid Ice Cream Sandwich adieu. Apple offers 256GB and 512GB SSD options for iMacs for those valuing speed over storage space

Apple is for the first time offering Solid State Drive (SSD) options on iMacs, bringing the number of drive configurations to four, reports  MacRumors . Those with lots of movies, music and photos to store will probably still want either the standard 1Tb hard drive or the fusion drive (a 128Gb SSD acting as a buffer to the 1Tb hard drive). But those with more modest storage requirements who want to significantly boost the speed of the machine can now choose a rather pricey 256Gb or 512Gb SSD to replace the hard drive. Continue reading

Lightroom for iPad on the way, as Adobe demos prototype version

CNET reports  Adobe demonstrating an early prototype of a version of Lightroom for tablets, designed primarily to act as a companion app to the full version … Tom Hogarty, Adobe’s group product manager for Lightroom, wouldn’t promise when the app would ship or what exactly it would do, but he did demonstrate some features of the prototype software running on an iPad 2. He also offered several details about its features: • The ability to edit photos taken in raw photo formats, including Lightroom develop-module parameters like exposure, clarity, shadows, highlights, and white balance. • Cloud-synchronized editing so that changes made on a tablet arrive on the same photo on the PC. • The ability to zoom all the way to 100 percent for checking photo focus and details. And without promising anything, he said he’d like to see some of Lightroom’s library-module features, like sorting photos into categories or flagging picks and rejects, in the app. While it’s unlikely that professionals and serious amateurs would use an iPad as their primary editing platform, there’s definite benefit in the ability to do sorting and basic edits at a shoot, or on the way back, and to have those edits sync with the photo when imported into the full version of Lightroom on a Mac. Haswell graphics performance makes Retina MBA a possibility – but not a certainty

The next generation Intel CPUs, named Haswell, offer support for 4k displays even in the lowest-power version likely to be used in the MacBook Air – making a Retina MBA a feasible option for the first time. Intel has announced that its Haswell processors will offer a choice of three different levels of integrated graphics, one aimed at long battery-life, the other two aimed at performance (via  AnandTech ). If terms like ‘integrated graphics’ leave you scratching your head, let’s start with some background … There are two different ways computers can display graphics. The first is with a dedicated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). The is the Rolls-Royce approach, delivering the best possible performance, and is used in most current Macs. But a separate video chip adds to the cost of the machine and uses more power, reducing battery-life. The cheaper method is what’s known as integrated graphics, where the main CPU also handles graphics, and is currently used in the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13 and Mac Mini. Historically, this has means significantly compromised video performance, limiting the frame-rate of games and the number of monitors the computer can support. What Intel is promising with its new CPU is the option of decent graphics performance without the need for a separate GPU. Intel is mostly focusing on what it terms the Iris versions of the chips. These are the H-series, which doubles the performance, drawing 47-55W of power to achieve it, and the R-series, which triples the performance at the cost of a 65-8W power draw. But what could be of more interest to MBA and MBP 13 owners is that the entry-level U-series chip, the one aimed at ultrabooks, claims to offer 4k video support while drawing just 15W of power. This is less than the 17w of the current MBA chip. It’s this which makes a Retina MBA a possibility. But before we get too carried away, we have to consider three different factors here. First, what does Intel’s claim of 4k support really mean? After all, Intel also claims the current -generation chip with HD4000 integrated graphics will drive a 4k display using a firmware upgrade – and it will, in theory. In practice, it does so very badly, offering frame-rates of around 24fps. This is well below any standard Apple would have considered acceptable. We need much more detailed info from Intel on that claimed 4k performance than the company has so far provided. Second, even assuming that the 4k performance of the U-series chip is acceptable, there is the issue of battery-life. A Retina display has much smaller pixels, and requires more backlighting – around twice as much – which is one of the major factors affecting battery-life. When Apple introduced the Retina iPad, the extra battery-power required resulted in the device getting thicker rather than thinner, as you would typically expect with a later model. Would MacBook Air buyers be happy with a hi-res screen if the machine lost some of its sleekness? Third, of course, is cost. While smaller Retina displays have higher yields and lower costs than bigger ones, they are still not cheap. The price difference between the standard MacBook Pro 15 and the Retina version is $600. Even assuming that price premium halved for the 11-inch MBA, that would still give it a price-tag of around $1100-1400. When part of the function of the MBA is to be an affordable entry into the Mac world, Apple may consider that too steep. But if we don’t get one today, it’s unlikely to be far off. Graphic processor power keeps climbing, and display technology keeps giving us more bang for the same buck. And in the meantime, support for three monitors with OpenCL 1.2, DirectX 11.1 and OpenGL 4 compatibility will still be something to behold in Apple’s power-saving lineup of Airs, Minis and low end Pros. Android metrics show Jelly Bean adoption overtaking Ice Cream Sandwich

Google’s big shake-up of Android version metrics has already given us a better understanding of where the platform’s active users truly stand. Now that we’re a month into the new methodology, we have a good sense of where those users are going — and they’re moving to Jelly Bean in droves. Android 4.1 and 4.2 combined grew to represent 28.4 percent of regular usage, or enough to finally overtake Ice Cream Sandwich at 27.5 percent. Not surprisingly, the transition to the newer OS involved a balanced mix of users either upgrading from ICS (down by 1.8 percent) or transitioning from devices running Gingerbread or earlier (down 1.7 percent). It will be a long while before Jelly Bean becomes the dominant platform, if it ever does, but we’re not expecting a slowdown in adoption when flagships like the Galaxy S 4 and One are luring many of us into an upgrade. OpenMobile ACL for webOS resurrected on Kickstarter, hopes to bring Android apps to HP Touchpad

The promise of OpenMobile’s Application Compatibility Layer is enticing : seamlessly run Android apps on another operating system as if it was meant to be there. Unfortunately for fans of Palm’s last hurrah, the project’s webOS port died with the HP Touchpad . That won’t stop dedicated fans, however — Phoenix International Communications plans to resurrect webOS ACL. Taking the project to Kickstarter, the team is showing an early build on an HP Touchpad, seamlessly running Android apps in cards alongside native webOS applications. Phoenix hopes that a functional ACL will reduce Touchpad owner’s reliance on dual-booting Android , giving them the freedom to enjoy webOS without sacrificing functionality. The team is promising a relatively short development time, thanks to OpenMobile’s early work, and hopes to deliver a consumer ready build in July. But first the Kickstarter campaign will need to meet its $35,000 goal. Interested in pitching in? Check out the Kickstarter link at the source. Google Glass’ vision of the future runs on a 2011 smartphone chip

Google Glass may represent the future of wearables, but its components are a vestige of the past — 2011, to be exact. That’s according to developer Jay Lee who dug up some interesting Glass tidbits using Android Debug Bridge. Taking to his Google+ page, Lee verified that Google’s smart eyewear currently runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich – a fact CEO Larry Page has apparently fessed up to — incorporates an OMAP 4430 processor running at an unspecified frequency and is paired with about 682MB RAM (out of a likely 1GB), though it’s not clear if this is a dual-core setup. For non-mobile industry historians, this particular Texas Instruments OMAP chipset hasn’t been used since the Droid Bionic and Atrix 2 in 2011, making it relatively ancient by industry standards. So, what other surprises lurk beneath the Glass? We’ll leave those mysteries to our EIC Tim Stevens to suss out in his Glass diaries . Pantech Perception official for Verizon, delivers motion-aware Android on April 25th

Unofficial details of the Pantech Perception have been around for long enough for the phone to feel old, but the truth is that it’s only just getting started. The 4.8-inch, mid-tier Android smartphone is at last launching with Verizon on April 25th, and it should cost $100 on contract after subscribers cash in a $50 rebate. It won’t trigger much regret among Galaxy S 4 buyers when it’s carrying a more GS3-like Super AMOLED 720p screen, 16GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front shooter. That said, Pantech does promise an extra level of software savvy: the company’s customized variant of Ice Cream Sandwich (soon to upgrade to Jelly Bean) centers on a Motion Sense suite that lets owners wave their hands to answer calls, switch tracks or navigate contacts and photo galleries. While we can’t say we’re bowled over by that claimed advantage, the Perception may just hit the sweet spot for those who want an alternative to HTC and Samsung for a bigger handset.
