Knights of Pen and Paper now updated to +1 edition

The excellent iOS RPG Knights of Pen and Paper has been updated to the +1 Edition (as we heard it would be back at GDC ) and is now available as a free update on the App Store. This new version, which is technically 2.02, brings lots of new content, game updates, new dungeons to explore, and many other extras. For example, there’s now a place called The Tavern, where you can keep old heroes and swap in new ones. Several new battle options nearly turned Knights of Pen and Paper into entirely new game. The +1 edition was spurred on by the game’s new publisher, Paradox. Thanks to that collaboration, the game is also now available on Steam for $9.99. But again, the iOS version is a free update, so if you’ve grabbed the game already, do be sure to download and give this version a try. If you haven’t purchased it yet, you can grab it now for $2.99. Neat revises mobile scanning app, adds expense reporting

Pushing towards a paperless future, the neat folks at Neat have released version 2.0 of Neat for iOS . The new build of the scanning-on-the-go application features much faster performance, scan annotation, new sharing and collaboration options, plus a new expense-reporting tool. Neat has made its bones as a desktop scanning solution, offering both compact and ADF-enabled scanners that work with the company’s Mac and PC applications for document management. The Neat mobile app extends that find-my-files experience for access on the go, with scans and folders synchronizing to the NeatCloud online service . You can quickly share folders or individual scans to collaborate with colleagues, or search the OCR / indexed text of your documents to find what you need quickly. The expense report feature is intriguing; it creates a summary PDF from a collection or folder of receipt scans, totaling up the expenditure and listing categories as it goes. It’s not going to supplant dedicated expense-reporting iOS tools like Concur , but for mobile freelancers who want a quick way to send expense overviews while simultaneously filing the receipts for safekeeping, it may get some traction. The NeatCloud platform also includes an optional human-powered verification step called NeatVerify , which will run the automatic OCR results from your receipt or business card scans (no documents) past the eyes of a real, live person for checking. You can get 30 credits for this service for US$4.99 a month, so it’s probably best to save it for key items. Speaking of credits, while the Neat application is a free download from the App Store, the required NeatCloud service works on a paid subscription basis. After a 30-day free trial, you will need either the $14.99 or $29.99 monthly NeatCloud plan (discounted if you sign up for a year) to use the app; both plans offer additional features like extra users, cross-service search and more. Compare and contrast the $45 annual cost of an Evernote premium subscription , and you get the sense that Neat is aiming at the more demanding side of the market. MacStadium announces plans for Mac Pro hosting and colocation while Macminicolo also plans to be ready at launch

MacStadium announces plans for Mac Pro hosting and colocation Less than a week since being teased at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the Mac Pro is already finding its way into new and useful places. MacStadium, which currently utlizes the Mac mini for dedicated hosting and colocation, has announced plans to offer Mac Pro hosting later this year. MacStadium has already developed custom racks for the new Mac Pro (via Macworld / TUAW ), which features a brand-new design that is much smaller than the previous model, and can store 270 Mac Pros in each Mac Pro POD. That’s fifteen rows, nine columns, and two Mac Pros per slot. Prior to its redesign, the Mac Pro would have populated rooms rather than racks with the same configuration. With nearly 300 Mac Pros taking up just 12 square feet of floor space, each Mac Pro POD will surely produce a small Florida county worth of heat! MacStadium’s Mac Pro POD With help from the Mac Pros thermal core center, MacStadium says it has developed a system to adequetly cool each Mac Pro POD: The MacStadium POD is a pressurized environment allowing the Mac Pro servers to effortlessly draw in conditioned air from the central chamber, and expel it thru its unified thermal core. Each server is provided redundant power, cooling, and a full Gigabit of Internet connectivity, all backed by live 24×7 support ensuring 100% uptime for even the most advanced implementations. Macminicolo isn’t missing out on the action. Soon after the Mac Pro was announced, Macminimolo issued this teaser via Twitter: MacProColo.net ? Of course. Stay tuned.— Macminicolo (@macminicolo) June 10, 2013 Macminicolo announced today plans for Xcode Server that includes an iPad and an iPod touch as part of a new server package. ”Our racks are all ready and can start hosting the day the Pros are released,” the company tells us. At WWDC  last week , Apple announced two things that really caught our attention at Macminicolo. Xcode Server  will be included in Server.app. This is huge. A number of customers here already use their minis as CI servers. (Here’s a post on  how the developers of Day One uses their CI server .) Jenkins is great, but Xcode Server is drop dead simple. We’ve been testing it here. When It’s publicly available, we’ll have a  specific package that includes a server, an iPad and an iPod touch. Everything you need to develop and collaborate your code. The Mac Pro is another great release. It’s smaller size, and crafted design, will make it great for a data center. Needless to say, it’s certainly an exciting time for hosting and colocation with the announcement of the all-new Mac Pro. Continue reading

Review: Is Chatology the solution for Messages search?

Messages for Mac is buggy. There’s no denying that fact. At some point, all of us have tried to search for a specific message in the app only to be confronted by everyone’s favorite multi-colored symbol of despair . Several weeks ago, Flexibits, developers of Fantastical for Mac and iPhone , announced a new project called Chatology that would finally solve this issue once and for all. Today, they unveiled the app to the world. So what exactly is Chatology? Does it solve the problem it sets out to solve? Keep reading to get answers to those questions and more. What is it? The biggest question that most people had when Chatology was first teased was simple: what does the app actually do? Some assumed that it would be a full-blown messaging suite with improved search features. Others hypothesized that it would be some kind of tweak or plugin for Messages that solved the search problem right in the same app. The real answer is somewhere in between those two. Chatology is a separate app, not a plugin. However, it doesn’t actually feature any messaging capability. You still have to use the Messages app to send or receive iMessages and IMs on other platforms. In short, Chatology is a chat log viewer. Messages for Mac saves every conversation you have to a file on your hard drive by default. These chat logs are then used to keep track of threads and conversations in the Messages app. If you delete those files (or disable saving them), your Messages app won’t be able to store the seemingly infinite chat history that you normally see. It’s these chat logs that Chatology reads. Upon first run, Chatology imports all of these messages (tens of thousands in my case, and probably more for many other users) and catalogs them so that you can easily search them. Chatology also provides some extra search parameters, making it easy to find links or images in a conversation. Chatology also has the ability to integrate with Messages. When this option is enabled, pressing Command-F in the Messages app brings up Chatology instead of the usual Messages search bar. This feature is very handy if you frequently search your messages but prefer Chatology’s search interface over Apple’s. Does it work? Now that we know what Chatology does, let’s address how well it does that. For starters, the design of Chatology makes it somewhat impractical for anything other than searching. If you just want to read a series of messages from yesterday or a few days ago, you’re probably better off scrolling backwards in the Messages app. Due to the way Chatology separates logs by date, if you don’t know the exact date of the message you’re looking for, it can quickly become a pain to find what you need. Another factor that can cause some trouble searching Chatology is the sheer number of messages that it stores. Because Chatology stores all of your logs from the Messages app, all of your AIM or Yahoo! messages are also logged, along with those from any services you might use, such as the Amy plugin. In my case, all of my App.net private messages, AIM conversations, and iMessages were imported. That’s a lot of conversations to go through. Even though Chatology searches through them all with no problem, narrowing down the results to the exact message you need can take some time because there’s no way to separate chat logs by the chat service that created them (this is OS X’s fault, not Chatology’s, however). Yes, Chatology works, and works well. It searches all of the chat logs on your computer with incredible speed. It can separate group chats from individual chats and separate those individual chats by sender, although it currently doesn’t combine multiple addresses into one contact, like Messages for Mac does, so you’ll have multiple entries for the same person if you chat with them on different services or using different iMessage addresses. What problem? When Apple finally released OS X 10.8.4 after what seemed like an eternal beta process , the update included fixes for searching in Messages that left the app running smoothly for almost everyone. This left Flexibits in an odd predicament. They had already positioned themselves as the incoming saviors of chat search, but now Apple had fixed the entire problem they set out to solve. They had been beaten to the punch. The bottom line The idea behind Chatology is great, but the execution is flawed. The interface, while simple and lightning fast, makes finding the right message difficult in many cases. The problem it was designed to mitigate no longer exists. Users who need the ability to search for links or images within conversations will enjoy the ability to do so, but the need to select a specific time and date that the image or link in question was sent essentially negates the usefulness of the feature. Unfortunately, I’m not sold enough on Chatology to recommend it to most users over the built-in search in Messages. Since the search issue has been resolved in OS X 10.8.4 (and Mavericks), I can’t see much of a need for a separate app to search chat logs, especially one that, in my opinion, makes searching no more efficient than it already is. A free trial of Chatology is available on the Flexibits website , and the full version can be purchased on the Flexibits web store for $19.99. Continue reading

Team behind iPad App of the Year 2012 gets $15m backing for ‘Office suite of the future’

FiftyThree, the software development team behind Paper , the highest-grossing app in the iTunes store , has raised $15 million in investment funding to create what it thinks of as the Office suite of a more creative future, reports  The Verge . “Our goal is to build essentially a suite of mobile tools for creativity,” says FiftyThree founder and Microsoft vet Georg Petschnigg, which means for all intents and purposes, FiftyThree has just begun. Well, Microsoft just debuted Office for iPhone, but an app that defined productivity on desktops — ported to mobile — doesn’t seem to be what Petschnigg has in mind. “It’s about imagining the right solution,” he says, “and that takes time.” …  Paper, awarded the title of App of the Year in 2012, works on the freemium model: the app is free, and you then buy paintbrushes for $2 each. It has seen 8 million downloads, 1.5m of them in the first two weeks. The app was updated last month with new features, including Made with Paper , a social feed of other people’s work created with the app to provide inspiration. FiftyThree isn’t giving much away when it comes to its future plans. Petschnigg has quietly amassed an all-star team of hardware designers for an undisclosed project. The company was co-founded by John Ikeda, who designed every Xbox 360 accessory from the controller to the Kinect, and has hired Jim Koo, ex-director of mechanical engineering at Sonos, and Audrey Louchart, who designed Microsoft’s award-winning Arc Mouse. Given its track-record and the caliber of its team, however, we’ll be watching with interest. Continue reading

Huawei Ascend P6 announced: 6.18mm thickness, 4.7-inch 720p display

We knew it was in the works given the sheer quantity of leaks but, with a small sigh of relief, Huawei’s Ascend P6 is now official. At the company’s London launch, the handset has been revealed with a 6.18mm-thick, all-metal body that weighs in at 120 grams — only 8 grams more than the iPhone 5, which, for the sake of context, has a thickness of 7.6mm. The 4.7-inch device comes with a 1,280 x 720 in-cell LCD display, 1.5GHz quad-core CPU and 2GB RAM. While users may be dismayed to read that the P6 has a small 8GB of storage, a microSD card slot will let you add up to 32GB more for your media perusal. The phone’s primary camera is an 8-megapixel, F/2.0 BSI lens with a 4cm macro, but the vain amongst you shouldn’t worry as there’s a 5-megapixel shooter up front. The build of Android 4.2.2 will be skinned with Huawei’s customary Emotion UI, while AV fans amongst you will be happy to see the handset boasting Dolby Digital Plus sound. A 2,000mAh battery and GSM/UMTS/HSPA+ radios round out the spec sheet, and the handset will be launching in China from June and western Europe from July, with 19 countries covered by the end of that month. A total of 100 nations will have the Ascend P6 by the end of the year, and an LTE version is due sometime in the fourth quarter. You’ll be able to pick it up in black, white or pink colors from places like EE, Three, Vodafone, O2, Orange and the Carphone Warehouse in the UK. Most Europeans will have to set aside €449 ($601) for the smartphone; we’re still waiting on pricing details for the UK and other countries.
