Amazon Kindle Keyboard 3G being discontinued?
Amazon confirmed as early as last September that the Kindle Keyboard would be sticking around , but much like your favorite dessert, nothing is forever. The Kindle Keyboard 3G is now showing as unavailable or out of stock at Amazon’s site, as well as at Best Buy and Target. Of course, the last of those has had this here device on sale for what feels like forever, but it’s still somewhat sad to see it come to the end of its road. It’s entirely possible that the company’s Lab126 is cooking up a replacement alongside those mythical smartphones , but it’s unclear if such a conceptual piece is on the immediate horizon. We’ve reached out to Amazon regarding the disappearance, and we’ll be sure to update this post as we learn more. [Thanks, John] Filed under: Amazon Comments Source: Amazon , Best Buy , Target Continue reading
Amazon lands Prime Instant Video exclusives for five NBCUniversal shows
Amazon is still determined to snag every TV exclusive possible , and it just scored one of its better deals — or at least, one of the more forward-thinking. It now has the sole unlimited subscription streaming rights to the previous seasons of five NBCUniversal shows. The highlight could be Hannibal , which will reach the service later this year; gamers may also like the crossover SyFy series Defiance , which should be ready in early 2014. Those who just can’t wait to stream something will get their fill through exclusives for Covert Affairs , Grimm and Suits , all of which are in the catalog today. Amazon isn’t completely shutting out rivals like Netflix, however: its expanded NBCU deal includes regular deals for Alphas , Eureka , Smash , Warehouse 13 and a collection of children’s shows destined for Kindle FreeTime Unlimited . While we’d prefer that there be as few exclusives as possible, there’s no question that some Prime members will feel better about springing for that $79 yearly fee. Amazon Instant Video strikes new deal for exclusives on popular NBC/Universal TV Shows
Today Amazon founder and CEO , Jeff Bezos, announced that Amazon has struck a deal to add new shows from NBC/ Universal studios to Amazon Instant Video . The additions include Grimm Season 1, Suits Season 1, Covert Affairs Seasons 1-2 with Hannibal coming and Defiance coming at later dates. Amazon has a 4 year exclusivity over these shows, preventing them from airing on competing services such as Netflix and Hulu. Amazon has been beefing up the content selection for this service recently with the addition of EPIX Studios , which brought “The Avengers,” “Iron Man 2,″ “The Hunger Games,” “Transformers Dark of the Moon,” “True Grit” and more to this streaming service. In its entirety, Amazon offers free streaming for more than 40,000 movie and TV titles. Amazon Instant Video is free for Prime members, a yearly membership that costs $79. US and Canada reach border spectrum sharing deals for broadband
Wireless use along the US-Canada border can be problematic: when there isn’t direct interference, there’s sometimes a fight over which devices get dibs on given frequencies. Don’t worry that the countries will rekindle their old disputes, though — instead, they’ve just struck interim deals to share more of their spectrum . Along with harmonizing 700MHz public safety networks , the pacts address AWS (1,700MHz and 2,100MHz), PCS (1,900MHz), 3.7GHz wireless broadband, mesh networks and even WiFi hotspots. When possible, both sides will use contention protocols to automatically resolve any conflicts. While the deals aren’t yet final, they should be strong enough to maintain some semblance of peace on the northern airwaves. [Image credit: National Film Board of Canada. Facebook finishes rolling out ‘Sections’ to people’s profiles, brings ratings, activities and apps to your timeline
In mid-March Facebook announced that it would be updating its Timeline design with a focus on users’ interests and app activities. Now the the new “Sections” are finished rolling out and you should be able to find them in the left-side of your profile. Now users can rate books, shows and movies in addition to curate personal content from other apps. As a bonus to developers that are integrating their services (such as Goodreads , Spotify and Endomodo), Facebook is offering a new App Insights tool to track user engagement through the Sections section of people’s profiles. So head on over to your profile right now to get a tweaking — you probably don’t want people to see how much you love that Bruno Mars album. ABC officially relaunches its Player app as Watch ABC with live TV streaming
Just as it revealed in an interview this weekend after months of rumors, the Disney / ABC Television Group has launched Watch ABC as an “open access preview” for New York and Philadelphia residents. Available on the web and as an iOS or Kindle Fire app in place of the old ABC Player , it still offers video on-demand playback of the network’s shows, but is the first to add live network TV streaming in those two areas. It will require customers to log in with their cable / satellite TV account details (Comcast, Cablevision, Cox, Charter, Midcontinent and AT&T U-verse are all signed up already) for access starting July 1st, but for now there’s no such restriction. ABC is promising a launch in all ABC-owned station markets by the start of the fall broadcast season, though most areas will need to wait for agreements with their local affiliates. Currently scheduled for launch after July 1st are Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh-Durham and Fresno, while Hearst Television has already signed on to launch streaming in its 13 markets as well. The app itself should resemble the WatchESPN and Watch Disney services we’ve seen roll out previously, and AirPlay streaming is disabled. The press release mentions Kindle Fire support, though we didn’t see it in the Appstore yet, and it’s coming to Samsung Galaxy devices “soon.” There aren’t any other Android devices mentioned, but hopefully more platforms will follow quickly. Hit the source links below for the app or to watch on the web, and there’s a press release after the break with more details. Twitter buys Lucky Sort startup to help visualize your tweets
Twitter just acquired Lucky Sort, a Portland, Oregon-based startup that built TopicWatch, a visualization and navigation engine known for presenting large amounts of data in an easy-to-digest format. With more than 200 million users in more than 160 countries , Twitter certainly has more than enough data to warrant the acquisition, which means hashtag infographics like the one above could be available for Twitter users in the near future. Fans of Lucky Sort’s TopicWatch product, on the other hand, will have to find some other venue for their data fix, for the service is set to shutter in the months ahead. Shocking , we know . Amazon purchases Liquavista display company from Samsung
Proving rumors correct, Amazon just purchased Liquavista , the touchscreen company previously owned by Samsung. This news comes from The Digital Reader , which discovered the acquisition via new filings from the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (Amazon also confirmed the news). That’s about it as far as details go, but it’s safe to assume that Amazon will employ Liquavista’s low-power color e-paper technology for its Kindle lineup.
