Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 revisits the FCC with AT&T-native LTE

Yes, we’ve seen Samsung’s Galaxy Mega 6.3 at the FCC before . With its second visit, however, there’s something special. The extra-large phone is back as the SGH-i527, and it’s carrying AT&T-native LTE that hints at a probable US carrier deal. There aren’t any other visible changes in the filing, although we weren’t expecting any. The real question is when this behemoth will ship to the States, assuming it ships at all — for now, any possible AT&T launch remains shrouded in mystery. Digg Reader Launching By June 26th

Google Reader’s demise is coming soon, and Digg is stepping up to fill the void. Digg Reader (version 1) will be out by June 26th for the web and iOS and it will focus on power users. Originally said to be coming in the second half of 2013 , the announcement of Google Reader closing shop accelerated Digg’s efforts to get Digg Reader on the market. With their focus on power users, Digg says their alternative will have the following: Easy migration and onboarding from Google Reader. A clean reading experience that gets out of the way and puts the focus squarely on the articles, posts, images, and videos themselves. Useful mobile apps that sync with the web experience. Support for key actions like subscribing, sharing, saving and organizing. There will be other features in the future, but Digg really wanted to get this service out there before Google Reader shuts down. The highlights of the  features coming in the future include an Android app, speed, and improved integration with third party services. Instapaper and Pocket will be supported at launch though. It will be exciting to see how good Digg Reader turns out. Will it be a clone of Google Reader or will it be unique? We’ll find out next week.   Continue reading

Why MakerBot Is Like Apple

When we first discovered that MakerBot was looking to partner with Stratasys, I was a bit non-plussed. MakerBot, as I’ve noted before, has a certain indie cred that makes this move a bit unpalatable. But, at the same time, it’s immensely important. Stratasys makes expensive, industrial-quality 3D printers. They are the “big iron” of the 3D printing world. Items printed on Stratasys hardware are as solid as anything produced by, say, injection molding, and the resolution make them indispensable for engineers and designers. In short, Stratasys is making mainframes and MakerBot is making the Apple I. While I’m loath to claim that Bre Pettis is Woz (let alone Steve Jobs), he is a charismatic leader who makes 3D printing fun, something the folks at Stratasys probably could never do. And, like Apple, MakerBot had to ramp up. By signing with Stratasys, MakerBot will be able to maintain its breakneck speed and growth. The company recently opened a 50,000-square-foot space in Brooklyn where it is assembling machines and it has office space in downtown Brooklyn overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. They have made it big with very little investment — they recently closed a $10 million round and were nosing around for more before this news — and they suffered from some severe growing pains along the way, especially in employee satisfaction . This purchase gives the company some breathing room, at the very least. Could MakerBot have made it without selling? Possibly, but it wouldn’t have been pretty. Home 3D printing is taking off. It’s not ubiquitous, to be sure, but it’s a method to turn bits into atoms that will become increasingly important in a post manufacturing world. Sadly, VCs are still suspicious of hardware startups (but that’s changing) and MakerBot could have gotten a few infusions of cash to help them glide to cruising altitude. Now they’re already there. Many will say that MakerBot sold out. Many will complain that the company lost open-source roots. Many will claim that there are better printers out there. None of these claims are absolutely false, to be clear, but things are not as cut and dried as we like to think. MakerBot took something simple and made it amazing. They sold when they had to, especially considering issues with quality control and support, and I trust Pettis will bring the open-source ethos to Stratasys headquarters and tell them it’s off limits. 3D printing isn’t new, just as computing wasn’t new when Apple hit the scene. MakerBot, like Apple, made it accessible. [ image via MakerBot ] Continue reading

Nokia RM-875 reaches the FCC, may be an international EOS

Nokia keeps slipping out clues as to what we might expect from its Zoom Reinvented event: following the RM-877′s appearance at the FCC, an RM-875 device has also popped up at the US agency. This new hardware looks like an international variant of the RM-877, and thus a second take on what we believe is the EOS . The RM-875 sheds what traces were left of its sibling’s 1,700MHz HSPA+ data and switches the LTE to more exotic 850MHz, 1,800MHz, 2,100MHz and 2,500MHz frequencies, but it’s otherwise a near perfect match in terms of dimensions and antenna layouts. The camera grip accessory and wireless charging cover persist, too. As such, it’s quite possible that whatever Nokia unveils on July 11th will ship worldwide — let’s just hope it ships quickly. Feedly RSS reader launches cloud service

Feedly is a service that’s risen in popularity recently for the most part because the much-loved RSS service Google Reader is coming to close on July 1 , but the company is definitely doing its best to make a space for itself as something more than just an alternative. Today, Feedly released the Feedly Cloud , which not only creates a standalone web-based RSS reader app, but also hooks all of your feeds into the cloud, which developers can then hook their own APIs into for various purposes. Just like Google Reader’s API, the idea is to allow Feedly’s work to power other readers, and in fact the service is connecting into IFTTT right away at launch, and opening up other options for future apps and tools. This also means that Feedly is available right inside your web browser (previously, the app required a plugin or extension in your browser to work correctly), and can be pulled up from anywhere. Personally, Feedly has become my reader of choice, partly because it works so similarly to Google’s service, and partly because it’s so easy to migrate from one service to the other. If you use Google Reader and haven’t yet chosen a new service, you’re running out of time, as Google is finally shutting everything down on July 1. Feedly is the best alternative I’ve seen so far, and this move to the cloud shows that the company is very interested in not only grabbing Google’s refugees, but keeping their patronage for as long as possible. Feedly RSS reader launches cloud service originally appeared on TUAW – The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 19 Jun 2013 15:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Apple seeds first OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 beta to developers, Retail

Following the public release of OS X Mountain Lion version 10.8.4 and the first Developer Preview of OS X 10.9 Mavericks, Apple has seeded the first beta of OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 to developers. The point release is likely designed to focus on bug fixes for those running OS X Mountain Lion. The build number is 12F9… Apple asks developers to focus on WiFi, Graphics, Wake-from-sleep, PDF Viewing, and Accessibility. Additionally, we understand that Apple has also seeded 10.8.5 to its Apple Retail team for extended testing in a more controlled environment. We reported yesterday that Apple seeded OS X Mavericks to Retail for testing, and we also reported that Apple is prepping the first seed of 10.8.5. Thanks, D! Lytro launches WiFi-connected iPhone app to share photos on-the-go

Lytro , the company behind the  light-field camera system by the same name , has launched an iPhone and iPod touch application. The app connects to the Lytro Camera via a WiFi connection to allow Lytro camera users to easily sync photos from the camera to the iOS device. Using the technologies in an iOS device, users, via the app, can then share their photos via social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. Because iOS devices have built-in text messaging and email capabilities, Lytro photos can be shared instantly via those mediums as well. Specific to Lytro , the free app also allows users to upload photos to Lytro’s own sharing site while on the move. Notably, the new Lytro iPhone app makes the first use of the camera’s secret WiFi chip. A software update specific to Lytro camera is required to officially unlock the hardware. In addition to sharing your own photos, the Lytro app can allow users to view the photos of other Lytro camera owners. A neat new bonus feature is the ability to create animated GIFs. Steve Jobs met with Lytro executives about integrated the light-field technologies into a future version of the iPhone.  The free Lytro iPhone app is available on the App Store. Press release: MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jun 19, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Lytro, Inc., creator of the world’s first consumer light field camera, today introduced Lytro Mobile App. This new iOS app lets people use their iPhone, iPad and iPod touch device to experience and share light field pictures taken with Lytro cameras. The app communicates with Lytro cameras, whose wireless capabilities can be activated with a free software update, letting camera owners preview and upload pictures to Lytro.com directly from their iOS device while on the go, using either a cellular or Wi-Fi network. The Lytro Mobile App will be available internationally as a free download, starting today. “Lytro Mobile makes it even easier to share light field pictures and lets people experience the benefits of light field technology with a device that never leaves their side,” said Jason Rosenthal, CEO, Lytro. “As the first to bring light field photography to consumers, we believe there is vast potential to this technology, and Lytro Mobile is the next step in building this category.” Camera owners and non-camera owners alike can download the app to experience living pictures on their iOS device, including refocusing pictures and experiencing Perspective Shift, with no special software required. “Mobile sharing of photos is universal and Lytro Mobile now offers the kind of desktop-free convenience people are accustomed to having,” said Ren Ng, Founder, Lytro. “We have taken a complex technology and made it accessible through an app that is easy to use for both sharing and viewing light field pictures.” Lytro Mobile allows people to: – Share a picture directly from an iPhone to Lytro.com, Facebook, Twitter or via email or SMS; – View popular and recent living pictures that everyone has shared to Lytro.com; – Save a living picture as an animated GIF to their iOS camera roll; – Access a series of “Learn” tips, educational content that will expand over time. Rdio iOS app updated with iTunes Radio-like Song Stations, AutoPlay, & more

The subscription based Rdio music streaming service today updated its iOS app with a few features similar to those included in Apple’s recently introduced iTunes Radio service. The most notable new feature is Song Stations which, much like iTunes Radio, allows users to automatically create a station based on any song with the ability to view and skip upcoming tracks. Another new feature in the updated Rdio app is “AutoPlay”, which automatically continues playing music similar to what you’ve just listened to when a station or playlist has ended. A full list of what’s new is below: What’s New in Version 2.2.1 • Song Stations. Start a station based on any song to hear more from that artist and other related artists. See four upcoming tracks and skip as much as you want. • AutoPlay. After the music you’re playing has ended, hear more like what you’ve recently listened to. • Various UI improvements and minor bug fixes.
