Apps Of The Week: Ibotta, Pinbook, Recent, Thin Reads, And Upwords

You’ll need an iPhone app this week to save money on those pesky necessities like groceries, so you can buy more apps. On the iPad we call a mulligan on a Pinboard browser, and for the Mac, we have an app that gives you a quick history lesson. On the web we’ve got a guide to short ebooks. If you’re still digging Words with Friends, but were looking for a taller challenge, try our game of the week. iPhone/iPod Touch: Ibotta The idea of coupons always seems like a good idea until you’re either knee deep in scraps of the mostly unread Sunday Paper, or you’re bottoming out your toner cartridge. Ibotta seeks to give you refunds and coupons without the scissors or even having to remember anything when you leave for the store. Ibotta gives you a list of products and the amount you can potentially earn from buying them. In addition to buying them, you can watch commercials, take polls, or get facts about the product. The payouts range from $.25 to $.75, meaning you aren’t going to get rich. After you complete your various tasks, you take a picture of your receipt making sure that product codes are visible and you can get a payment sent to your Paypal account. Ibotta is free in the App Store, and requires an account sign-up, you can download it here. iPad: Pinbook Okay so a few weeks back we listed a different Pinboard browser for iOS, but it was limited to reading functions and searches. Pinbook improved on that app in every way. For one, you actually log into your Pinboard account. This means that you can work directly with your Pinboard account from within the app. You can create new bookmarks inside the app, and if you have a URL in the clipboard it will offer to create the bookmark automatically. You can search through your own bookmarks by either searching or browsing your tags. This is an app for the antisocial Pinboard users. You cannot browse other user’s content, only manage your own. Pinbook is $4.99 on the App Store. Mac: Recent The absolute worse feeling in the world is forgetting where a file is just after you save it. Use a vague naming convention for your files and you might never find it. Recent is a menubar utility that allows you to see a list of your recently used Apps and files. It’s a simple app, but useful. You grant the App filesystem access and then define the amount of time the app considers recent, and then it’s set up. By default it shows a list of all recent items and recent Apps used. You can customize searches, or use the several predefined filters. Once it’s set you always have the saved searches in your menu bar. Recent is free in the Mac App Store, download it here. Web: Thin Reads Ebooks have allowed for a proliferation of short form content that never really had a home in traditional publishing. Prominent authors like Stephen King have embraced the medium. However in the iBooks and Kindle stores it’s difficult to find this content. Thin Reads maintains a database of all the short-form content in a variety of e-bookstores. They have reviews on the site, as well as author interviews. They maintain a bestseller list that’s mostly based on Kindle sales. The downside is that they don’t link directly to any of the stores, making it a bit difficult to act on the listings. Thin Reads is free and you can check the site out here. Game of the Week: Upwords You can sum up Upwords in two simple words: stackable Scrabble. That said, there is a bit more strategy to Upwords, as you score more points based on the number of times you’ve transformed a word by adding to it. You max out at five letters stacked together and as the board gets more complex, the strategy is engaging. If you’ve played Scrabble or any of its clones, Upwords is a pick up and play game. Scrabble and Words with Friends refugees will love the app because all of your friends who cheat to make one big word can’t run away with the game. The game tends to stay close, and you have to play creatively to ensure that you?re building new words while scoring big from adding to the existing tiles. The Upwords app has a free and paid version, and connects to your Facebook account for online play. You can also play local multiplayer on the same device. The ad-free version of Upwords is $1.99, download it here. The post Apps Of The Week: Ibotta, Pinbook, Recent, Thin Reads, And Upwords appeared first on Macgasm . Continue reading

OS X And iOS Mashup Appears Online — OSXi A Concept

People have been saying for years that OS X and iOS are on an inevitable crash course. With Lion, Apple began bringing over some of the more popular iOS features to OS X. Mountain Lion continued the trend. Just how far Apple will carry the iOS themes to OS X is anyone’s guess, but there are a lot of things that Apple could do to make OS X feel more like iOS in 10.9. Noah Gray has put together an interesting concept , called OSXi, that brings a new dock and menubar to OS X. Spotlight got a relocation too. It’s easy to imagine a lot of these things in OS X in 10.9, and it’s really easy to see the appeal of such an approach. Hiding the Dock and iTunes player in the way the OSXi concept does is pretty appealing for me. The less clutter in my OS, the better. The image above is only a small subsection of the concept. If you want to see the entirety of the design, we recommend clicking through to the concept page. The post OS X And iOS Mashup Appears Online — OSXi A Concept appeared first on Macgasm . Enter to win MacUpdate’s Spring Bundle

I bought the MacUpdate Spring Bundle last week and it includes some great software (listed below). As usual, bundles are a great way to quickly grab a group of applications for an ultra-low price. In this case, the full bundle costs as much as just one of these pieces of software — MotionComposer alone is $149. If you’ve been wanting to try virtualization, Parallels is included in this bundle (although you’ll need your own copy of Windows if you plan to install it). MacUpdate’s own service is included for six months. The handy MacUpdate app will scan your Applications folder for files and alert you when one of them needs an update. If, like me, you wind up buying a lot of stuff outside the Mac App Store, this is a valuable service. Here’s the full list of applications we’ll be giving away, and we’re giving away three of these bundles! Just follow the instructions below. First, the apps (and their full prices): Parallels Desktop 8 – $79.99 – The best way to run Windows on your Mac. DEVONthink Pro 2 – $79.95 – A powerful information organizer. Prizmo 2 – $49.95 – Scan/OCR any document or photo. MotionComposer 1.6 – $149.00 – Create professional HTML5 and Flash Web animations. 1000 OpenTypeFonts Collection – $99.00 – Complete with commercial-use and WebFont licenses. iStat Menus 4 – $16.00 – Monitor your Mac from the menubar; a power user’s dream. PhotoStyler 6 – $29.99 – Add dazzling effects and personalize your photos. DiskAid 6 – $29.90 – A must-have utility for iPhone, iPad, or iPod owners. Intego Mac Internet Security 2013 (3-Pack) – $74.98 – The #1 malware solution, rebuilt for 2013. MacUpdate Desktop (6 months) – $10.00 – The best way to keep all your apps up-to-date. Now, how to enter: Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older. To enter, fill out the form below completely and click or tap the Submit button. The entry must be made before March 19, 2013 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time. You may enter only once. Three winners will be selected and will receive a MacUpdate Spring Bundle valued at $50. Click here for official rules. Evernote Launches New Quick Note Feature

Evernote has rolled out a new update to its app that brings shiny new Quick Note functionality to the Mac app. You’ve always been able to launch a note directly with the keyboard shortcut CTRL-CMD-N, but previously it has brought the entire Evernote application to the foreground, and takes over whatever you’re working on at that particular moment. In this update, all that quick note goodness happens directly from the menu bar. It’s fantastic. Hitting CTRL-CMD-N will open the note in the menu bar, and from there you can add images, voice notes, and grab screenshots, as well as write down whatever you need to in that particular moment. The only thing that opens is the menubar item, and whatever you were working on in that moment will stay in the foreground on your Mac. Once you’re done, hit CMD+Return and you’ll be taken back to your last used app while Evernote begins syncing your notes. It doesn’t get much handier than that. Once you get the hang of it, there’s no going back. While the Mac App Store update is still in queue waiting for approval, you can grab the update directly from Evernote’s servers already. I’ve been using Evernote more and more every day. For the last eight months I’ve used it for all my writing needs, todo lists, and the organization of content for editorials and feature posts. The app is pretty much whatever you want it to be. For us, here at Macgasm, we use it as a document repository for our writing team. It’s, by far, the best solution we’ve come across. Dropbox 2.0 For Mac Now Available

Everyone’s favorite file syncing application has finally shed the 1.0. Dropbox has just taken version 2.0 live for Mac users . It may have been available for some time in beta, but it’s official, you can download 2.0 directly from Dropbox. The release note, clearly inspired by Apple’s glorious approach, leaves a lot to be desired. However, the company does point out that there’s a new tray popup from the menubar, and better a timeline for your drops. Users can now see invites immediately, and accept invitations to shared folders from directly within the menubar notification system. It’s all real-time. You don’t have to wait around for an email anymore. Here are the rest of the details from the release notes: New in 2.0.0: Fix a bug where discrete graphics would be enabled on OSX laptops. Add support for Brazilian Portuguese. Other small fixes. Here are a few things you should know: It is only enabled on Mac OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and above, and on Windows XP and above. It is not yet enabled on Linux. You can download it here. The post Dropbox 2.0 For Mac Now Available appeared first on Macgasm . Continue reading

Infographic: iPhones, iPads Are Devices Of Choice For In-Air Wi-Fi Connectivity With Gogo

A new infographic published by Gogo looks at what airplane passengers are using and doing with Gogo in-air Internet and, more importantly, which devices are being used. In the not-so-surprising results, Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad dominate in-flight Internet usage. According to the  infographic , tablets and smartphones in general now make up 67% of the devices that are being used to connect to Gogo. Tablets are the most preferred device at 35%, laptops at 33% and smartphones at 32%. Apple devices remain the device of choice though, with the iPad taking the top spot. Of all the mobile devices being used to connect to Gogo, 84% were Apple devices, while 16% were Android devices. The most popular devices used to get online are Apple devices at 73% and Android devices at 26%, while both Blackberry and Windows devices make up less than 1% of usage. Gogo found that the majority of passengers connect to the Internet for general Web surfing. Other than that, passengers also spend their time checking email, social media sites, checking sports scores and shopping. Business travelers ranked accessing work and finalizing reports as the most frequent use for Internet in the air. Some also use it to check the weather of where they’re going, entertainment options, and directions for once they arrive.
