Digg Reader Launching By June 26th

Google Reader’s demise is coming soon, and Digg is stepping up to fill the void. Digg Reader (version 1) will be out by June 26th for the web and iOS and it will focus on power users. Originally said to be coming in the second half of 2013 , the announcement of Google Reader closing shop accelerated Digg’s efforts to get Digg Reader on the market. With their focus on power users, Digg says their alternative will have the following: Easy migration and onboarding from Google Reader. A clean reading experience that gets out of the way and puts the focus squarely on the articles, posts, images, and videos themselves. Useful mobile apps that sync with the web experience. Support for key actions like subscribing, sharing, saving and organizing. There will be other features in the future, but Digg really wanted to get this service out there before Google Reader shuts down. The highlights of the  features coming in the future include an Android app, speed, and improved integration with third party services. Instapaper and Pocket will be supported at launch though. It will be exciting to see how good Digg Reader turns out. Will it be a clone of Google Reader or will it be unique? We’ll find out next week.   Continue reading

Parallels Desktop 8 Now Supports OS X Mavericks Developer Preview

The folks at Parallels have announced that Parallels Desktop 8 now supports OS X Mavericks . The engineering team has posted two guides to the Parallels website that shows Mavericks users how to install the operating system within a Parallels virtual environment as well as how to start Parallels Desktop on Macs running OS X Mavericks . These guides are available free of charge. Installing the developer preview of OS X Mavericks within a virtual machine is much less riskier than doing an install over OS X Mountain Lion. This is due to the fact that Mavericks is still in beta, so there may be some data-threatning bugs within the operating system that could potentially corrupt your data. Parallels Desktop 8 is an application that allows users to run virtual machines on their Macintosh. This means that a user can install and run multiple operating systems at the same time. This is helpful for software and web developers who need to test their applications on multiple operating systems at the same time. You can purchase a single-user license of Parallels Desktop 8 for $49.99 via Amazon.com . Parallels also has an iOS app that allows you to control your virtual machines for $4.99 in the App Store.  Image Source: Parallels Continue reading

Just Kidding, The Xbox One Won’t Have DRM’d Games Or Require Internet Access

Don’t worry gamers, the Xbox One will not have DRM covered games or require an active internet connection after all. Microsoft has released a statement that retracts these requirements, and ensures that you can lend, sell, or gift your old games without having to go through Microsoft. The company has also said that both physical games on a disk and digital games from the Marketplace can be played offline and that the system will not have to connect to the internet every 24-hours to play them. Via the Xbox News site : An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games– After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360. Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360. These changes come after a large backlash from gamers who threatened to switch to PlayStation after hearing about the new DRM policies. These policies would’ve made it rough for users to trade in games, and could’ve hurt small, independent game stores. Continue reading

Why MakerBot Is Like Apple

When we first discovered that MakerBot was looking to partner with Stratasys, I was a bit non-plussed. MakerBot, as I’ve noted before, has a certain indie cred that makes this move a bit unpalatable. But, at the same time, it’s immensely important. Stratasys makes expensive, industrial-quality 3D printers. They are the “big iron” of the 3D printing world. Items printed on Stratasys hardware are as solid as anything produced by, say, injection molding, and the resolution make them indispensable for engineers and designers. In short, Stratasys is making mainframes and MakerBot is making the Apple I. While I’m loath to claim that Bre Pettis is Woz (let alone Steve Jobs), he is a charismatic leader who makes 3D printing fun, something the folks at Stratasys probably could never do. And, like Apple, MakerBot had to ramp up. By signing with Stratasys, MakerBot will be able to maintain its breakneck speed and growth. The company recently opened a 50,000-square-foot space in Brooklyn where it is assembling machines and it has office space in downtown Brooklyn overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. They have made it big with very little investment — they recently closed a $10 million round and were nosing around for more before this news — and they suffered from some severe growing pains along the way, especially in employee satisfaction . This purchase gives the company some breathing room, at the very least. Could MakerBot have made it without selling? Possibly, but it wouldn’t have been pretty. Home 3D printing is taking off. It’s not ubiquitous, to be sure, but it’s a method to turn bits into atoms that will become increasingly important in a post manufacturing world. Sadly, VCs are still suspicious of hardware startups (but that’s changing) and MakerBot could have gotten a few infusions of cash to help them glide to cruising altitude. Now they’re already there. Many will say that MakerBot sold out. Many will complain that the company lost open-source roots. Many will claim that there are better printers out there. None of these claims are absolutely false, to be clear, but things are not as cut and dried as we like to think. MakerBot took something simple and made it amazing. They sold when they had to, especially considering issues with quality control and support, and I trust Pettis will bring the open-source ethos to Stratasys headquarters and tell them it’s off limits. 3D printing isn’t new, just as computing wasn’t new when Apple hit the scene. MakerBot, like Apple, made it accessible. [ image via MakerBot ] Continue reading

Asymco’s Horace Dediu measures the iTunes video store

The iTunes video store is a strange market to track. Most of Apple’s attention and press these days is going to the App Store, and obviously iTunes wouldn’t exist without the music store. But the video store, where you can buy and rent movies and TV shows, is sort of the quiet third pillar of Apple’s digital retail service. And Horace Dediu of Asymco has posted that it’s doing big numbers indeed. After Apple announced new numbers for both TV show and movie downloads (1 billion and 380 million, respectively), Dediu crunched the numbers , and determined that the rate of spending on iTunes video is about US$1.75 billion per year. That’s sizable for sure, though as you can see in Dediu’s chart above, video still only makes up a small piece of the amount of money traveling through the various iTunes stores. Dediu also says the picture of what users are spending on iTunes is becoming more clear. He estimates that users spend the most every year on apps, about $16 a year. Furthermore, $12 a year is spent on music, per user, and $9 a year is spent on software (on the Mac App Store or elsewhere). Then, about $2 a year is spent on books, and $4 a year is spent on video. So iTunes video definitely isn’t the biggest store that Apple is running, but it does make up a fairly sizable piece of the entire pie. WWDC 2013 Videos Can Now Be Downloaded Via The Developer Portal

Apple has posted videos of all 2013 WWDC sessions to the Apple developer portal . These videos are available free of charge to all registered Apple developers and can be streamed via Safari or be downloaded to your desktop for later viewing. The videos cover everything from accessibility in both iOS and OS X to testing your apps in Xcode 5. These videos will be extremely helpful for developers who need to update their applications for iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks. Many design changes will have to be made to existing apps for use in iOS 7, so it will be nice to have a visual guide to walk you through the changes. This year’s WWDC, or World Wide Developers Conference, took place from June 10th to June 14th. The event kicked-off with Apple’s famous keynote where iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks as well as a new MacBook Airs and a new Mac Pro were announced. The rest of the event included tons of informational sessions for iOS and OS X developers. Tickets to the event sold out in just over 70 seconds, so it’s nice that Apple is giving developers who couldn’t purchase tickets access to the sessions for free. Continue reading

Apple Wins A $30 Million Dollar Contract With Los Angeles Schools For iPad

While Microsoft and Apple are currently battling it out to become the leading name in education and schools, Apple has just gotten a significant boost. The U.S.’s second largest school board “The Los Angeles Unified School District”, has announced that it will be purchasing roughly 35,000 iPads, a sum that will amount to an estimated $30 million. The 35,000 iPads will be distributed to 47 different schools within the district and will cost roughly $678 per device. The higher price is attributed to the educational software that will be included on each unit. While the school board considered whether or not it should approve the contract, a Microsoft representative argued his case against the decision. He argued that the school shouldn’t put all of its money into one platform and device, and that they should support some kind of competition between devices to result in lower prices and a better product. He also argued that the school should purchase Microsoft tablets as the kids should have experience working with machines that they will find in the workplace. In response to this, the board agreed that Apple’s tablets were clearly the superior product, and that it wouldn’t be fair to give some students a lesser one. Ouch. While the board of education voted unanimously 6 to 0 in favor of the contract, a number of upper staff were forced to leave the discussions because they owned a small amount of stock in Apple. Superintendant John Deasy has even been featured in an Apple promotional video about education. The deal is expected to reach into the hundreds of millions in the next couple years, including repair, expansion and upgrade costs. Image Credit: Bloomberg Continue reading

Rdio Opens Up Its Vdio Movie Streaming Service To Non-Rdio Members

When Rdio first unveiled its movie and TV show streaming service to the world last month, users had to be premium Rdio subscribers if they wanted to try out buying or renting one of the film’s selections. Now, however, Rdio has opened up access to the service, as users in the U.S. and UK can now sign up for Vdio directly with their Facebook or e-mail account, with no need to have an existing Rdio account. Unlike Rdio, Vdio is a video-on-demand service that doesn’t require any monthly subscription. Users can rent or buy from a number of new release movies and shows from prices ranging between $4.50 and $15.00. It’s a similar offering as to what iTunes offers in its own movie store. Rdio says that it does have future plans to expand into a streaming service, as well as into other territories. Right now, however, it wants to focus on newly released content, that it says can only be delivered through an on-demand format. If you’re in the U.S. or UK, check out the site’s offerings here . You can also download the official iPad app here . Continue reading
