Apple testing deep LinkedIn integration for iOS 7

Further bolstering the presence of third-party social networks in iOS , Apple is testing deep LinkedIn integration for the upcoming release of iOS 7, according to code-based references found inside of the first beta of iOS 7. The code points to a single-sign-on system, similar to how iOS integrates Facebook and Twitter, for LinkedIn accounts. The references also indicate that users will be able to easily post content, such as Web links, to LinkedIn via a share-sheet or through iOS applications… According to Hamza Sood , who discovered and sent us the LinkedIn code and text strings, certain pieces of code are missing for the LinkedIn functionality to become active. Perhaps this is why LinkedIn integration is not present in the user-facing version of the first iOS 7 beta. It is currently uncertain if Apple plans to continue to develop LinkedIn integration for iOS 7, or if it will be a feature that simply vanishes after internal testing. Apple has cut social networks from iOS in the past. For example, back in 2010, Apple tested versions of iOS 4 that included Facebook integration, but the two companies did not agree to a deal until 2012 with iOS 6. Apple added Vimeo, Flickr, and Tencent Weibo integration with iOS 7. iOS 7 integration with LinkedIn would not be unprecedented. At the WWDC 2013 keynote, Apple and LinkedIn announced ties for the upcoming release of OS X Mavericks. Linkedin integration in Mavericks allows for single-sign-on app access, sharing from Safari, Notification Center-based alerts, and a presence inside of Safari for Mac’s Shared Links view . Twitter is noticeably alone in iOS 7′s Shared Links panel, so adding LinkedIn integration to iOS 7 would seem logical. Screenshots of the aforementioned code and text strings: Continue reading

Video: Is this Apple’s iOS 7 running on an iPad, or just a tease of what to expect?

Russia-based YouTube user  Rozetked  has published a video of what he claims to be the tablet-optimized version of Apple’s upcoming iOS 7 operating system running on an iPad. It is currently unclear if this video is demonstrating a legitimate version of the upcoming operating system and, if legitimate, how the software was obtained and installed… Based on what Apple has shown for the iPhone and iPod touch version of iOS 7, and based on the user-interface elements of previous versions of iOS for the iPad, the video does look like an accurate representation of what iPad users can expect from iOS 7 this fall. Apple is yet to seed the iPad version of iOS 7 to developers, as the company has focused development (so far) on the iPhone version, as we reported in May. Notably, user-inteface elements such as in the Music app seem to be akin to the brief stills of the iPad iOS 7 Music app shown on Apple’s website and during the WWDC 2013 kickoff keynote. Additionally, unlike with the screenshots from the tweaked iPad iOS 7 simulator , the Control Center and Notification Center interfaces seem to be optimized for the larger tablet screen. Additionally, matching the iPad’s software and hardware, the Control Center shown in the above video lacks the iPhone-exclusive LED Flashlight and Calculator functions. Continue reading

Apple expands OS X Mavericks testing to Retail, iOS 7 to Cupertino locals for feedback

Following the announcement of major updates to both OS X and iOS, Apple has begun seeding versions of the new operating systems beyond its own engineers and third-party developers. Beginning this week, several sources say, Apple has begun seeding the initial preview of OS X Mavericks to Genius Bar and on-floor Apple Retail employees. These select employees received the following message: You are invited to participate in the pre-release OS X Mavericks seed program. Participation, including submitting feedback, is completely voluntary and not an expectation of your job. If you accept, we will provide you with a pre-release version of OS X Mavericks to install and use. You will get to preview all of the exciting new features like iBooks, Maps, Calendar, Safari, iCloud Keychain, Multiple Displays, Notifications, Finder Tabs, Tags, and much more! You should use OS X Mavericks only your personal computer and on your personal time. Apple will provide you with ways to submit feedback on your experiences with OS X Mavericks, should you choose to do so. Apple also asks that you use future builds of OS X Mavericks as they are made available. The responses from prior seed programs have been overwhelmingly positive. Thank you to everyone who participated! This program is designed in order to gauge feedback in a more controlled environment about the major Mac OS update. Additionally, putting OS X Mavericks in the hands of Retail employees will allow the employees to become intimately familiar with the system ahead of the fall launch. Apple initiated a similar program approximately one month before OS X Mountain Lion shipped last summer. In addition to Retail employees, we understand that Apple has already seeded OS X Mavericks to its outside AppleSeed testing group. This seeding to AppleSeed is fairly early in comparison to initial OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Lion seeds in previous years. We also understand that Apple is preparing initial betas of OS X 10.8.5, a bug fix update for Mountain Lion, but a release time-frame for the betas is currently unclear. Notably, on the iOS 7 end, multiple sources say that Apple is working to expand testing of the next-generation iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch operating system beyond developers. Sources say that Apple is holding on campus sessions with Cupertino locals to gauge feedback on the radical design and interface changes in iOS. Apple has conducted similar programs in the past for specific, major software features, but rarely holds such previews for whole major operating system releases. It is unclear how these people have been picked, but it is probable that they are family members of Apple employees, according to two people. Full Mavericks invitation to Apple Retail employees: Continue reading

Facebook iOS app updated with emotions for status updates, better control over sharing

Facebook updated its iPhone and iPad app today with a couple new features. Users can now attach a number of different emoticons to status updates organized into several categories based on emotion, content, and location. For example, the “Feeling” category will allow users to attach an emoticon next to a message like “Im feeling happy,” while the “Watching” and “Listening to” sections let users link to Facebook profiles associated with content they want to share. You can also now start a conversation with photos you’ve received in messages and Facebook says the updated app includes the ability to “Easily change who can see something you’ve shared.” What’s New in Version 6.2 • Add icons to status updates to show what you’re feeling, reading, watching and more (English only) • Easily change who can see something you’ve shared • Start a new conversation with photos you receive in messages • Bug fixes Continue reading

Hidden settings show Apple tested additional gesture, folder enhancements for iOS 7

Screenshots via  Hamza Sood In addition to the several new user-facing features introduced by Apple for iOS 7, hidden settings inside the new system have revealed that Apple has been testing other new enhancements. Hamza Sood  discovered the hidden settings options, and these toggles reveal additional gesture, multitasking, and folders options. The settings are not readily available to users of the iOS 7 beta, but acces requires some unspecified tweaking. Notably, Apple is testing system-wide edge-swipe and corner-swipe gestures for iOS 7. These gestures would bolster the already present edge-swipe feature in iOS 7 for Messages, Safari, and a couple of the other pre-installed iOS apps. According to these settings, Apple’s testing of these gestures would expand to being used for quick-app-switching. Video and more details below: Video by Hamza Sood In terms of new functionality being tested, the ability to hide pre-installed apps (a feature that many users have been requesting) is present in these settings. The ability to create a new folder inside of a folder is also present. This function would seem more important in the old folders implementation as iOS 7′s folders system allows for multiple pages of apps to be stored inside of each folder. The option to pinch to close folders is also present in these settings. Screenshots via Hamza Sood Other hidden settings are present for tweaking blur effects, coloring, and animation speeds. Because these are hidden settings, it is likely that these functions will not appear in future public version of iOS 7. These options will likely remain internal to Apple. Nonetheless, it is intriguing to see what Apple has tested (or is still testing) for its first major iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch OS redesign. Continue reading

Video hands-on: iTunes Radio, Mavericks display integration for Apple TV

When iOS 7 launches later this year, Apple’s upcoming iTunes Radio service will not only be found on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but on the Apple TV set-top-box as well. As we previously highlighted , the Pandora-competing streaming music service is available for testing on iOS 7 devices, but today, we have filmed a hands-on video of the iTunes Radio implementation for the corresponding fall Apple TV software update… As you can see in the video above, iTunes Radio is available as a standalone app on the Apple TV interface. Like on iOS 7 devices, iTunes Radio for Apple TV includes a series of stations compiled by Apple. Additionally, users can create custom stations based on specified artists, genres, or specific song titles. The menus are akin to those for other Apple TV apps such as the standard Music player. The ability to purchase songs through iTunes and listen to music in the background is also present. iTunes Radio is currently exclusive to users in the United States, but we previously published a workaround for international music fans.  In addition to iTunes Radio, the upcoming Apple TV software update will work with OS X Mavericks to be a wireless standalone display. In past OS X and Apple TV versions, functionality capped at the ability to AirPlay Mirror a Mac’s screen to a display connected to an Apple TV set-top-box. iTunes Radio, this fall, will also be available on Macs and PCs via an iTunes update. Apple TV Beta Adds iTunes Radio and Conference Room Display Mode

The Apple TV is a great entertainment device at a low price. It already does a lot, but Apple is apparently adding two more features to make the Apple TV even better. In the most recent Apple TV beta, Apple has added the ability to stream music via an iTunes Radio app. iTunes Radio was announced last week at the WWDC 2013 keynote. It is a way to stream music to iOS devices running iOS 7. According to the video on AppleInsider , the iTunes Radio app appears to have the same feature set as its iOS 7 counterpart. This includes genre and artists stations, as well at the ability to purchase music. The other new feature is the Conference Room Display mode, which allows for custom messages to be shown on screen so users in a conference room know how to connect to the Apple TV via AirPlay and share content. This makes setup a lot easier as not everyone has used AirPlay in the past and may be unsure of how to use it. Overall, these are nice additions to the Apple TV. Though neither feature is groundbreaking, it makes the $99 spent on an Apple TV easier to swallow. Not that it was hard to swallow before, the Apple TV is easily the biggest bang for your buck in the company’s lineup. It’s a fantastic little media device. Continue reading
