Adobe releases latest Creative Cloud apps, surveys disgruntled customers about pricing

Love it or hate it, Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription-based software is now the only way to get your favorite apps like Photoshop, Premiere Pro and the like. The company has just released the latest versions of most of those programs, now dubbed CC, which can be installed alongside the current apps for those afraid to change mid-project. Meanwhile, Adobe’s trying to tempt previous suite or apps owners to transition to the new system for up to 60 percent off for CS6 owners during a 12-month period, or 40 percent off for those on CS3 to CS5.5. According to Photo Rumors , Adobe is also considering a new pricing structure in response to a massive online backlash against the subscription model from existing clients, who feel it’s too expensive. The company sent out a survey asking some of them what they thought about paying $10 per month for three years for Photoshop, or $30 for the entire suite, while being able to keep a permanent CS6 copy of either at the end. Considering the level of vehemence we saw earlier, we’ll have to wait and see if that’ll fly. Meanwhile, check the PR after the break to see what’s new in all the apps. Apple TV Beta Adds iTunes Radio and Conference Room Display Mode

The Apple TV is a great entertainment device at a low price. It already does a lot, but Apple is apparently adding two more features to make the Apple TV even better. In the most recent Apple TV beta, Apple has added the ability to stream music via an iTunes Radio app. iTunes Radio was announced last week at the WWDC 2013 keynote. It is a way to stream music to iOS devices running iOS 7. According to the video on AppleInsider , the iTunes Radio app appears to have the same feature set as its iOS 7 counterpart. This includes genre and artists stations, as well at the ability to purchase music. The other new feature is the Conference Room Display mode, which allows for custom messages to be shown on screen so users in a conference room know how to connect to the Apple TV via AirPlay and share content. This makes setup a lot easier as not everyone has used AirPlay in the past and may be unsure of how to use it. Overall, these are nice additions to the Apple TV. Though neither feature is groundbreaking, it makes the $99 spent on an Apple TV easier to swallow. Not that it was hard to swallow before, the Apple TV is easily the biggest bang for your buck in the company’s lineup. It’s a fantastic little media device. Continue reading

Verizon To Enter Canada As Country’s 4th Major Player?

Canada is looking for a fourth company that could come in and disrupt the Canadian wireless market, which currently has some of the world’s highest cellphone prices. Verizon is interested in being that company. Verizon would buy one of the country’s small and struggling wireless companies, either Wind or Mobilicity, before then expanding its presence buy purchasing a number of new wireless spectrums from the government. The company would then go up against the nation’s big three companies: Bell, Rogers and Telus. Canadian wireless company Telus recently attempted to purchase Mobilicity, however, the company was stopped by the Canadian government. The government stated that it was trying to get more competition within the country, not trying to let the big three companies get bigger. Verizon would reportedly have to pay upwards of $500 million if it wanted to buy Wind, although this wouldn’t be a tremendous expense for Verizon which raked in $20 billion in this year’s first quarter alone. Analysts estimate that the company would then have to invest another $2 billion to completely turn the struggling Canadian company around. While Canada used to have tough laws regarding foreign ownership of wireless companies within the country, it has since become more lenient in an attempt to drive up competition and to drive down prices. Verizon’s massive sway and buying power with cell phone manufacturers could have the company easily undercut Canadian competitors with its offerings. Verizon currently has 100 million subscribers in the U.S. a number much much higher than any major Canadian company. While Verizon sounds like its certainly the most serious potential entrant, other companies like AT&T are reportedly also interested in joining the Canadian market. No matter which company ends up being a major player in Canada, Canadian customers should expect to benefit as a result, but probably not. Just look at the US market and all their “cheap” offerings. Apple To Build Flagship Store Next To Microsoft Store In Palo Alto

While Microsoft impressed a number of people with the opening of its flagship store in Palo Alto last year, complete with a Maroon 5 launch party, Apple seems to think that the company has had enough time in the spotlight. Apple is currently hard at work on the construction of what is said to be a visually stunning retail store, right by Microsoft’s impressive Palo Alto location. The move is reportedly being done to show up Microsoft’s store with a more impressive looking Apple Store location. If you think that Apple’s being a bit harsh with its decision, note that Microsoft actually started this battle. The impressive Microsoft Store in Palo Alto was intentionally built right next to a comparatively small Apple retail store. Now Apple is retaliating by one-upping Microsoft with what should be an even bigger and more beautiful location. The move was reportedly one of the last ones made by Steve Jobs, who signed off on the building’s construction just six months before current CEO Tim Cook took over. While the construction site is primarily blocked away from public view, TechCrunch reports , “It’s a massive space and the glass facade will be a striking architectural accomplishment that makes the store stand out even with impressive neighbors.” Long story short: Microsoft thought it would be funny to open its flagship store next to a small Apple Store. Apple didn’t find it funny. Image Credit: Mary Orlin , Olivier Bruchez Continue reading

1 Million Samsung Galaxy Owners To Get New Jay-Z Album For Free

Recently, we told you about a $20 million partnership deal that Samsung had offered rapper/business man Jay-Z. At the time, it wasn’t clear exactly what the details surrounding this deal were, but now it seems we know at least part of it. Samsung has announced that it will be giving away 1 million copies of Jay-Z’s upcoming album “Magna Carta Holy Grail” to its Galaxy phone owners, and that they will also be receiving the album three days before its official release date. To take advantage of the offer, you’ll have to have either a Samsung Galaxy SIII, a Galaxy S4 or a Galaxy Note II. The album will become downloadable on June 4th to the first million Galaxy owners, three days before it is released to the public. Users will download it through an official app that is set to be released on June 24th. The app will provide bonus behind the scenes videos and information as it leads up to the album’s official release. This is a massive deal for Samsung, who reportedly paid $5 for each of the million copies it’s giving away. It’s unclear whether all of Samsung’s $20 million has gone into the marketing around this album, or if it still has more planned with Jay-Z for the future. If you’re a Galaxy owner that fancies Jay-Z, mark your calendars for June 4th. Continue reading

Photos Of Possible iOS 7 Game Controller Hit The Web

The folks at Kotaku have published a photo of the first “Made for iPhone” game controller. This controller is apparently produced by Logitech and looks to follow the design guidance images that Apple released alongside iOS 7, the first version of iOS to support hardware game controllers. This is due to the fact that the controller houses a circular D-pad, a pause key, and four action buttons. According to Apple’s documentation, we should also see the controller offer either two or four side buttons, but due to the blurry photograph, it’s hard to tell. This controller also looks to connect to the iPhone via a Lightning connector. Kotaku has also noted that Apple will not likely be producing its own controller. However, companies like iFrogz  have already announced controllers that will take advantage of the new API. These companies will likely refine their announced controllers before release in order to be certified by Apple. We should see these controllers and others launch around the time iOS 7 hits public release. Via: The Verge Continue reading

Video Messaging Update Comes To Skype

While a beta version of the new feature has been around since February, today marks the day that all Skype users can take advantage of Skype’s video messaging service. The feature lets users send up to three minute videos to anyone on their contacts list, even if that user is offline. The new update is available on both the desktop version of Skype as well as iOS and other mobile platforms. Skype markets the feature as a way to video chat with friends who’s schedules don’t match up. Skype is all about keeping people close — but even the best technology can’t solve the problem of busy schedules or missed calls. Want to say goodnight to your kids while traveling, but you’ll be up in the air? Need to wish your dad a happy birthday, but can’t seem to catch up? Spot something interesting while you’re out and about, and want to share with your friend? Update Skype on your iOS device to try out the new feature now. Continue reading

Steve Jobs Biography Paperback Due September 10

The official Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson will be released on paperback on September 10, 2013. This news has come out of Simon & Schuster, the book’s publisher. Though this paperback will be mostly the same as the readily available hardcover and eBook, the publisher has stated that the book will be given an afterword that was not included with previous versions. As of now, the price of the book is still unknown, though we’re expecting it to be cheaper than that of the hardcover. Aside from a new afterward, the paperback will be given a new cover that features young Steve Jobs. This photo was taken in 1984 by Norman Seeff, a South African photographer. According to Mashable , this photo was taken in Jobs’ mansion at the same time as the iconic photo of jobs holding a Macintosh in his lap. The Steve Jobs biography was originally published in October of 2011, just weeks after the death of the Apple cofounder. The book gives a great insight into both Jobs’ thoughts and personality. The book doesn’t leave out anything, so you’re getting the the good, bad, and ugly of his life in one sitting. If you haven’t read the biography yet, the release of the paperback may be a good time to start. However, if you can’t wait, the hardcover is available for just under $18 via Amazon.com . Rumor Roundup: Samsung fan fiction

WWDC has come and gone, and now we know what iOS 7 looks like. For some reason, that still hasn’t stopped graphic designers with too much time on their hands from generating mockups… and of course, it hasn’t stopped the endless tide of boneheaded Apple rumors. New report claims Apple’s ‘iPhone mini’ could launch next month (BGR) Some analyst claims the low-cost iPhone will launch next month. BGR spends a good portion of this article making fun of the guy. When even BGR is pointing and laughing at your claims, your career as an Apple analyst is essentially over. Alleged ‘iPhone 5S’ parts show FaceTime camera, home button, vibration motor (AppleInsider) Buried within the center of a dead article: “The images cannot be fully verified as components in a future iPhone.” Okay, then. iPhone 5S release reportedly pushed back to October (BGR) Some analyst throws a dart at a wall, and it hits “October.” For some reason, this qualifies as newsworthy. According to the analysts, the iPhone 5S was already supposed to have launched 57 times by now, so the only logical conclusion is Apple’s suppliers are unable to keep pace with analysts’ entirely random and unsubstantiated predictions, and therefore Apple is DOOMED. iMac Update to Haswell Expected in June or July as Shipments Sink (MacRumors) Another article sourced entirely from an analyst’s random musings. This guy has been right a few times in the past, but MacRumors still only classifies him as “relatively accurate.” I’d like to know what batting average separates “hit-or-miss” from “sometimes accurate” or “relatively accurate.” In this case, we have an analyst contradicting his own prior analysis — he’d made earlier claims pointing to a late 2013 launch for new iMacs. Calling this “relatively accurate” isn’t an abuse of the English language; it’s taking the English language out into the Nevada desert and burying it. Apple’s OS X Mavericks hints at future Retina Thunderbolt Displays and iMacs (AppleInsider) Apple posted a wallpaper that’s exactly twice the pixel width and height of Apple’s current 27-inch displays, so AppleInsider rolls out the Jump to Conclusions Mat and claims this is a hint that Retina-caliber Thunderbolt displays are on the way. AppleInsider also notes that a high-res wallpaper from OS X Lion “hinted” at forthcoming Retina display MacBook Pros… which didn’t launch until a year later . Even the blue whale can’t hold its breath for that long. Is Apple ditching the ‘Black & Slate’ color option on the iPhone 5S? (BGR) Speaking of jumping to conclusions… actually, in this case, it’s more like BGR slipped on a banana peel and tumbled over a logic cliff. “There are dozens upon dozens of images [on Apple's website] showing iOS 7 on the iPhone 5, but I just looked through them all and aside from tiny thumbnails, I was only able to find one mockup of iOS 7 running on a black iPhone,” BGR writes. Okay… so what? “By itself, this isn’t necessarily evidence that Apple is ditching the black iPhone” — actually, let me stop you right there. Not only is it not evidence, it’s the opposite of evidence. It’s completely meaningless. It’s like looking at Mount Rushmore and claiming there will never be a female President. BGR then says currently “leaked” SIM trays have so far only shown up in silver and gold, and offers this as further evidence (I just ran out of sarcasm quotes) to prompt a repeat performance: “So I ask again… is Apple getting rid of black on the iPhone 5S?” Welcome to Non Sequitur City. Population: You. “Apple’s black iPhone 5 has had some issues with scuffing, but ditching the color entirely would be a curious move.” Curious is one word for it. Not gonna freaking happen is four more, slightly more accurate words for it. iOS 7 design changes remain in flux, likely to see major revisions before release (AppleInsider) BREAKING: Design elements in beta software, not due to be released to the public for three months, may be altered in the intervening months before release. More on this astonishing story as it develops. This was just one of probably hundreds of articles that have come out in the past week regarding iOS 7′s supposedly “controversial” design. I’ve been using iOS 7 since the day after it became available. Here’s my prediction: “normal” people, in other words non-geeks, who have for several years constituted the overwhelming bulk of people buying iPhones and iPads, are going to love this new design. They may not consciously know why , but they’re going to eat it up. Apple looking at bigger iPhone screens, multiple colours – sources (Reuters) Reuters classifies this as “Apple [taking] a cue from rival Samsung Electronics,” and says it “underscore[s] how the California-based firm that once ruled the smartphone market is increasingly under threat from the South Korean competitor.” This is a perfect example of the ongoing efforts certain publications are (STILL) making to twist the narrative around to suit their idea of the truth rather than the actual truth. Here’s the actual truth, Reuters: Apple never “ruled” the smartphone market by the measure that publications like yourself seem to focus on to the exclusion of all other factors — market share. Apple has never been the number-one smartphone vendor worldwide by that measure. It probably never will be. But by every other measure, including profits, revenues, number of apps available, the percentage of people actually using all those smartphone features, customer satisfaction, and industry recognition, Apple still “rules” the smartphone market in spite of your attempts to tell the story otherwise. “Apple declined to comment.” Well, duh. “Critics say its pace of innovation has slowed since the death of legendary co-founder Steve Jobs.” Serious question: have you people been contractually obligated to include variations of this monumentally stupid sentence in every single Apple article since October 2011? “The current iPhone 5 has one of the smaller screens among the best-selling smartphones in the mobile market, where consumers spend more time browsing the web and streaming content. Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 have 5-inch and 5.5-inch screens, respectively.” And yet the numbers also show that people are using iPhones to browse the web far more and far more often than people with those larger screens on Samsung devices. But the evidence doesn’t fit your desired conclusion, so we’ll just ignore it and move on. “Apple has sought ways to re-energize its flagship line.” Apple sold 37 million iPhones in three months, compared to 35 million in the same quarter of the previous year. They sold more phones than a year earlier, yet by the same kind of math where 2 + 2 = 5, this somehow means Apple is a beleaguered company losing its innovative edge and desperately turning to copying the supposedly-ascendant Samsung in order to turn its flagging fortunes around. Reuters is no longer a news organization. Reuters is writing Samsung fan fiction . Rumor: Apple’s inexpensive iPhone to adopt colors from iPhone 4 Bumpers (AppleInsider) “A fresh rumor out of the Far East” — have to interrupt here, there’s no such thing as a “fresh” rumor from that part of the world — “claims Apple will launch a low-cost iPhone in September in five colors.” This is not a fresh rumor, no matter which definition of fresh you’re using. It’s months old, and the first person to raise the “many-colored iPhone” flag was an analyst whose track record is as spotty as a leopard with measles. Rumor: Apple suppliers now shipping ‘large number’ of parts for low-cost iPhone (AppleInsider) This type of article reminds me of something Tim Cook said last year about not putting too much stock in supplier reports, because it’s impossible to gain any idea of the whole picture that way. It also reminds me of the story of a bunch of blind guys touching various parts of an elephant, with one guy calling it a tree, another a snake, and so forth. Rumor: Samsung to supply 7.9″ Retina displays for Apple’s next iPad mini this year (AppleInsider) If the iPad mini 2 Electric Boogaloo launches without a Retina display, now you know whose offices to storm with torches and pitchforks: Korea’s ETNews . Entry-level iPhone, Retina iPad mini to reportedly begin shipping in August (BGR) According to Digitimes, something something yadda yadda not a chance. New iPhone 5S parts leak, again pointing to internal overhaul (BGR) BGR has more BREAKING EXCLUSIVE photos of ribbon cables and metal connectors to tantalize and titillate — don’t give me the hairy eyeball, I said “titillate,” not whatever you thought I just said. By this time last year, enough parts had leaked out that you probably could have assembled your very own fully-functional iPhone 5 if you had halfway decent soldering skills. All we’ve got so far this year is a bunch of ribbon cables. I don’t know about you, but I actually prefer it this way. Instagram May Get Vine-Like Video Sharing Feature

With the Facebook event just around the corner, people have been speculating about what “big ideas” the company is planning to announce. Well, it looks like Facebook could unveil a new feature for its Instagram service that would let people take and share short videos, similar to the Vine app. It’s really just a rumor at this point, but according to TechCrunch , this could be one of Facebook’s announcements at the event on June 20. TechCrunch also notes that the information has not been confirmed, and could actually even be an “intentional blind alley” to throw people off the scent. Instagram bringing a video-sharing feature has been the source of rumors for a while now, especially since Vine debuted to huge success with its six-second video sharing service. Facebook has been rumored to be testing internally a Vine-like video feature for its Instagram app, with videos between five and ten seconds in length. Given Facebook’s history of “me too” behavior when it comes to releasing new services and features, we wouldn’t be too surprised if they release a Vine clone. Since Vine launched on Android earlier this month, the service has become much more popular than Instagram on Twitter, but this could also be because Twitter no longer shows inline views of Instagram photos.
