Square Enix uses your face for action in Bloodmasque
Square Enix’s Bloodmasque was undoubtedly the strangest game I saw at E3 last week, and in a year defined by indie titles and two new HD consoles, I think that’s saying something. Square Enix has had a weird time with the App Store — other companies like Capcom and EA have found a lot of success in smaller titles, but Square Enix has clung to its own console traditions, releasing relatively large and high-quality, high-production titles for a relatively high cost. Bloodmasque follows this trend (though the price has yet to be announced just yet), and it also brings one weird little twist that was actually more charming than I expected. The game is based in an alternate universe, sort of steampunky version of Paris in 1890, where an empire of vampires (yes, a vampire empire) rules the world. One plucky adventurer has the guts and the magical powers to stand up to those empires, and that adventurer is you. Literally you, I mean, because the game scans your face, and then inserts it right on to the main character. That’s me and my character above, though keep in mind that this was day three of E3, so if I look a little tired, that’s why. The face-scanning thing is a gimmick, and yet strangely it works: After my face was scanned in and my hair was tuned to the right shape and color, I watched as my character (a little more fit than I am) saved a damsel in distress, and carried out a vampire fight scene. I tapped to attack, swiped to dodge and then when the vampire was almost dead, pulled off a jumping leap and staked him right in the back of the neck. You can actually record three different faces, so you get one frowning, one standard and one smiling. Each of them can look very different, which can make the animation a little strange. Even under the best of conditions, the face looks weird and a little creepy, sure, but I could tell it was me, so I guess that’s the point. Bloodmasque itself is really just a series of missions, which you navigate around via an overworld map. There’s a light social game built on it as well — you can choose two friends to join you in battle scenes, and their faces will also show up on screen as you play (you can elect to keep your face private, if you like, or you can choose a premade face if you’re not interested in showing your mug to the world). Your friends get bonuses when you use them in battle, and vice versa, so having an oft-used mug will earn you more blood for upgrades and XP for missions. There are exploration levels, too, but I found them pretty bland, unfortunately. We’ll have to wait until the full game arrives to see if the story pulls us in at all. But the setting is distinct (steampunk is always a plus), and that face gimmick makes for a very interesting twist indeed. If the combat can sustain the fun, Bloodmasque could be a riotous way to put a character together, featuring your very own look. Square Enix seems attached to the idea that selling premium games at a premium price will work, and I’m not one to disavow them of that, especially as lots of other companies race towards the bottom. Bloodmasque should be an interesting experiment — it’s set to come out sometime later on this summer. Dish doesn’t submit another bid to buy Sprint, will ‘consider its options’
The latest move in the standoff between Softbank, Sprint, Dish Network and Clearwire has been made, as Dish stated today it will not submit another bid for Sprint. This comes after Sprint sued to stop Dish from buying Clearwire , which the satellite company called an attempt to deflect attention from its own unfair dealings. If you’ll recall, Dish Network jumped in with a $25.5 billion offer to buy Sprint , but after Japanese carrier Softbank improved its proposal slightly, Sprint put Dish on a deadline to respond. That time limit expired today, and Dish is choosing to consider its options on Sprint, while focusing on completing the Clearwire deal. Apple testing deep LinkedIn integration for iOS 7
Further bolstering the presence of third-party social networks in iOS , Apple is testing deep LinkedIn integration for the upcoming release of iOS 7, according to code-based references found inside of the first beta of iOS 7. The code points to a single-sign-on system, similar to how iOS integrates Facebook and Twitter, for LinkedIn accounts. The references also indicate that users will be able to easily post content, such as Web links, to LinkedIn via a share-sheet or through iOS applications… According to Hamza Sood , who discovered and sent us the LinkedIn code and text strings, certain pieces of code are missing for the LinkedIn functionality to become active. Perhaps this is why LinkedIn integration is not present in the user-facing version of the first iOS 7 beta. It is currently uncertain if Apple plans to continue to develop LinkedIn integration for iOS 7, or if it will be a feature that simply vanishes after internal testing. Apple has cut social networks from iOS in the past. For example, back in 2010, Apple tested versions of iOS 4 that included Facebook integration, but the two companies did not agree to a deal until 2012 with iOS 6. Apple added Vimeo, Flickr, and Tencent Weibo integration with iOS 7. iOS 7 integration with LinkedIn would not be unprecedented. At the WWDC 2013 keynote, Apple and LinkedIn announced ties for the upcoming release of OS X Mavericks. Linkedin integration in Mavericks allows for single-sign-on app access, sharing from Safari, Notification Center-based alerts, and a presence inside of Safari for Mac’s Shared Links view . Twitter is noticeably alone in iOS 7′s Shared Links panel, so adding LinkedIn integration to iOS 7 would seem logical. Screenshots of the aforementioned code and text strings: Continue reading

Vine 1.1.3 update adds a share button
A new update has been released for the popular social video app Vine that adds a sharing button beneath posts in your feed, along with the standard bug fixes that come with every update. Sharing is a nice touch that the app has been sorely lacking since its launch. When you hit share, you’re given a list of options: Twitter, Facebook or embed. When you share your own videos, the link is sent directly to the feed of your choice with no option to insert a personal message. The Vine is simply shared with the text you attached to it. However, when you share a friend’s Vine you’re given the option of attaching your own text to the repost, so you can tag friends… or perhaps enemies. You can find the Vine version 1.1.3 in the App Store right now. Vine 1.1.3 update adds a share button originally appeared on TUAW – The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 18 Jun 2013 17:30:00 EST. Amazon Birthday Gift helps you buy your Facebook friends something nice, lets others pitch in
Look at the people with smiling faces in the above illustration. It’s not too difficult to figure out what’s going on: it’s their birthday, and they’re all happy because they’re about to get presents. What if they knew that you had totally spaced on the fact that they were celebrating the anniversary of their birth? Fortunately, there are plenty of services that will remind you of friends’ and family members’ DOBs, and Amazon is now joining their ranks with a Facebook-integrated program called Birthday Gift. The idea is simple: you can order an Amazon gift card for a Facebook friend ahead of time, and the company will make sure it gets delivered on their momentous day. What’s more, you can also send invites to mutual friends to see if they want to pitch in a few bucks. This way, nobody feels terribly cheap for plunking down a couple dollars, and you won’t settle for the standard Wall post birthday wish. Check out the video below to see how it all works. MacStadium announces plans for Mac Pro hosting and colocation while Macminicolo also plans to be ready at launch
MacStadium announces plans for Mac Pro hosting and colocation Less than a week since being teased at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the Mac Pro is already finding its way into new and useful places. MacStadium, which currently utlizes the Mac mini for dedicated hosting and colocation, has announced plans to offer Mac Pro hosting later this year. MacStadium has already developed custom racks for the new Mac Pro (via Macworld / TUAW ), which features a brand-new design that is much smaller than the previous model, and can store 270 Mac Pros in each Mac Pro POD. That’s fifteen rows, nine columns, and two Mac Pros per slot. Prior to its redesign, the Mac Pro would have populated rooms rather than racks with the same configuration. With nearly 300 Mac Pros taking up just 12 square feet of floor space, each Mac Pro POD will surely produce a small Florida county worth of heat! MacStadium’s Mac Pro POD With help from the Mac Pros thermal core center, MacStadium says it has developed a system to adequetly cool each Mac Pro POD: The MacStadium POD is a pressurized environment allowing the Mac Pro servers to effortlessly draw in conditioned air from the central chamber, and expel it thru its unified thermal core. Each server is provided redundant power, cooling, and a full Gigabit of Internet connectivity, all backed by live 24×7 support ensuring 100% uptime for even the most advanced implementations. Macminicolo isn’t missing out on the action. Soon after the Mac Pro was announced, Macminimolo issued this teaser via Twitter: MacProColo.net ? Of course. Stay tuned.— Macminicolo (@macminicolo) June 10, 2013 Macminicolo announced today plans for Xcode Server that includes an iPad and an iPod touch as part of a new server package. ”Our racks are all ready and can start hosting the day the Pros are released,” the company tells us. At WWDC last week , Apple announced two things that really caught our attention at Macminicolo. Xcode Server will be included in Server.app. This is huge. A number of customers here already use their minis as CI servers. (Here’s a post on how the developers of Day One uses their CI server .) Jenkins is great, but Xcode Server is drop dead simple. We’ve been testing it here. When It’s publicly available, we’ll have a specific package that includes a server, an iPad and an iPod touch. Everything you need to develop and collaborate your code. The Mac Pro is another great release. It’s smaller size, and crafted design, will make it great for a data center. Needless to say, it’s certainly an exciting time for hosting and colocation with the announcement of the all-new Mac Pro. Continue reading
