AT&T To Start Offering iPhone On Its Prepaid GoPhone Plans

AT&T has announced that it will finally begin offering Apple’s iPhone on its prepaid GoPhone plans . People who wish to use the iPhone on the GoPhone service plans will have to pay the full, unsubsidized price of an AT&T iPhone or bring their own SIM unlocked model. These customers will be able to use AT&T’s current $25 and $50 per month plans, though data packages will have to be purchased separately. AT&T will also allow iPhone to be used on the $65 per month GoPhone plan that includes data access. Previously, iPhone users on GoPhone plans were unable to take advantage of AT&T’s LTE network. However, AT&T has stated that users who are currently using the iPhone on AT&T’s prepaid plans will be upgraded with network data access on June 21st. This means that all smartphone users on GoPhone plans with compatible devices will be able to use the company’s LTE network. These users will also be given access to AT&T’s Visual Voicemail service. GoPhone is AT&T’s prepaid mobile division. Though the service has been around for quite sometime, it has never been the best for smartphone users. This is due to the fact that AT&T has never sold an extensive line of smartphones via GoPhone and has only offered limited smartphone support for unlocked users. Propellerhead to stop selling ReBirth for iPhone

Act quickly mobile music producers. Propellerhead, makers of the recording software Reason, have announced that they will stop selling and supporting the iPhone app ReBirth on June 1. ReBirth is a iOS version of the company’s Techno Micro Composer that started as a Mac program. The app emulates a Roland TB-303 bass synth and TR-808 and 909 drum machines. Using FX and sequencers the app allows users to create whole songs. The more expensive iPad version of ReBirth isn’t going anywhere, so home producers will still have that option. Ultimately the iPad version of the program is the strongest one, adding the ability to export your songs as MP3 files, unlike the iPhone version which can only share songs with other ReBirth for iPhone users. Sadly along with pulling the app from the iTunes store Propellerhead is also pulling support for ReBirth, meaning users will no longer be able to share their songs with other users who have the app. By removing the app’s only method of sharing the music it creates it seems like Propellerhead is intentionally crippling a popular feature on the app in favor of its iPad alternative. ReBirth is stil available in the iTunes store for $2.99 until June 1. Google And Microsoft Now Besties, Teaming Up For YouTube App

Its been a little over a week since Larry Page told us that there needed to be more collaboration between companies in the technology sector, and then saw his company turn around and send a cease and desist letter to Microsoft for creating a YouTube application for Windows Phone that didn’t display ads. Microsoft played the honey badger, and kept the application up anyway . Turns out that they’re actually besties now , and they’re collaborating on a new YouTube app for Windows phone with advertisements. The app should be out in a couple of weeks From the sounds of it, the companies worked out their API issues, but details are sparse. We don’t know exactly when the app will go live. We don’t know what agreement the companies have reached to get to the point where at YouTube application can exist on Window Phone. Basically we know nothing , as usual. Continue reading

SMI, others to use Champions League final as eye-tracking experiment

It may be the most watched sporting event, but SMI’s more interested in how we watch the Champions League final than the game itself. The eye-tracking firm, in participation with the KMRC and University of Tübingen, will observe how 61 fans watch the Dortmund/Bayern tussle using its RED-m cameras. The project aims to discover if supporters of rival clubs perceive matches differently and, by tracking their eye movement, learn how those perceptions are formed. Of course, given our violently hysterical reactions when Didier Drogba sunk the winning penalty in last year’s game, the researchers might have difficulty keeping the participants still enough to monitor. Apps of the Week: Limelight, Frozen Synapse, Multimon, Dots, Gini

We’re switching things up in the weekly app department at Macgasm. (A department of one, but the placard was already at the printer’s office.) The format has been to pick five apps by platform. Problem is, not every platform has a stellar app week, while there have been a lot of iPhone and iPad apps that we weren’t able to show you. Since we want to make sure that you get the coolest apps, this column will now just be the top 5 regardless of platform. So this week we have for you an app to organize and share your movie wish list for iOS. We have an iPad port of a popular PC strategy title. For your Mac we have a multi monitor utility for you power users. We finally find out what the hub hub is about the latest iOS game obsession. Finally we have a project design tool for the iPad.   Limelight Limelight isn’t a movie app for the casual movie fan. If you plan your Saturday around catching multiple movies at the cineplex and Netflix, then Limelight is going to be a big help. You can go through and select your favorite movies and add them to your list of watched films. You can also browse through upcoming movies and add them to your ‘To Watch’ queue. You can also go back catalog and add those to your queue, for those you’d rather wait for Netflix or iTunes to rent. You can share your lists with Facebook and Twitter, or you can share with other users of Limelight directly. (They actual seed you with some high profiles users. Though these are developer types, not film critics, which may not be a good fit.) Limelight is $1.99 from the App Store   Frozen Synapse Frozen Synapse was an indie strategy game for the PC. With highly stylized graphics, a cool soundtrack, and fiendishly in-depth mechanics, the game was fairly popular. It was a mostly mouse based game, so its port to iOS was met with some concern, but it has been really successful. Frozen Synapse puts you in charge of a squad of soldiers fighting in a blend of reality and cyberspace. You give exact orders for movement direction and the aim of your soldiers before setting the turn and letting the actions go and the enemy react. In addition to simple battle modes, you have escort and hostage rescue missions that require a different approach. With online multiplayer, which can sync with your PC/Mac account for stats, this game is going to keep you busy. It’s difficult, but fun. Frozen Synapse is available on the App Store for $6.99 Multimon Though Macs support multiple monitors, it’s never been really the focus of the OS. To make matters worse there’s never really been an equivalent to Ultramon for Windows. Second Bar was a possibility, but it was out of date and a little flakey. Multimon appears to fill that void, and it’s in the Mac App Store. Multimon’s first and obvious benefit is to add a copy of the menu bar on your secondary monitor. This saves you a lot of mousing time. On the secondary menu bar and the Multimon icon in the primary bar, you can send the active window to your other monitor, or choose which monitor it should be on. The array of keyboard shortcuts to arrange windows and minimize and maximize them might be worth the purchase price alone. Multimon is $7.99 on the Mac App Store.   Dots Dots is another minimally designed game for iOS. Like Letterpress, when you’re done playing, your phone looks a little old fashioned. Well that is what most of the press seems to think. Does the game merit the hype? Well if you like speed puzzlers like Bejeweled Blitz or 10000000 then Dots should be right up your alley. You’re given sixty second to connect group of two or more dots in straight lines. You can connect horizontal and vertical lines of dots, but you cannot move diagonally. Making squares out of your dots is actually the real key to a high score, as this clears all dots of that color from the board. There are boosts for time and clearing dots that you can purchase using your scores, or real money if you feel so inclined, which adds some strategy. Dots is free on the App Store.   Gini Gini is a project management tool masquerading as a mind mapping app. On the iPad you are presented an array of project templates you can use for common small business/ freelance tasks, like writing a book or starting a restaurant. It seems a bit frivolous to lay out an article using Gini, as it’s about as overqualified as an english lit major at Hallmark. The app allows you to create ideas for your project, create areas of focus and tasks, as well as do case studies. It does it all using a custom interface, including file management, which may need a bit of a learning curve. Gini is $4.99 in the App Store. Continue reading

Apple Increases Maps 3D Flyover Coverage In California

Apple recently expanded its Maps 3D flyover coverage in California, including popular tourist attractions like Disneyland in Anaheim. Apple has steadily been improving its mapping offering since its release last September. The wider coverage in California includes support for San Bernardino, Riverside, Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario and Moreno Valley, and more. Now Maps offer almost unbroken coverage of cities from San Bernardino to the Pacific Ocean. It’s unclear if Apple has added coverage to more than just these California cities with the new update as this was a quiet update and Apple hasn’t actually announced the changes. Earlier in May , Apple increased its flyover support in Paris, France, covering areas like Versailles, Aulnay-sous-Bois, Disneyland Paris and L’Hay-les-Roses. Since January, the company has added over 16 new cities. With Apple continuing to improve Maps and quietly updating and expanding its coverage all the time, it won’t take much longer to bring Maps up to the company’s standard. Continue reading
