Apple To Build Flagship Store Next To Microsoft Store In Palo Alto
While Microsoft impressed a number of people with the opening of its flagship store in Palo Alto last year, complete with a Maroon 5 launch party, Apple seems to think that the company has had enough time in the spotlight. Apple is currently hard at work on the construction of what is said to be a visually stunning retail store, right by Microsoft’s impressive Palo Alto location. The move is reportedly being done to show up Microsoft’s store with a more impressive looking Apple Store location. If you think that Apple’s being a bit harsh with its decision, note that Microsoft actually started this battle. The impressive Microsoft Store in Palo Alto was intentionally built right next to a comparatively small Apple retail store. Now Apple is retaliating by one-upping Microsoft with what should be an even bigger and more beautiful location. The move was reportedly one of the last ones made by Steve Jobs, who signed off on the building’s construction just six months before current CEO Tim Cook took over. While the construction site is primarily blocked away from public view, TechCrunch reports , “It’s a massive space and the glass facade will be a striking architectural accomplishment that makes the store stand out even with impressive neighbors.” Long story short: Microsoft thought it would be funny to open its flagship store next to a small Apple Store. Apple didn’t find it funny. Image Credit: Mary Orlin , Olivier Bruchez Continue reading →

Photos Of Possible iOS 7 Game Controller Hit The Web
The folks at Kotaku have published a photo of the first “Made for iPhone” game controller. This controller is apparently produced by Logitech and looks to follow the design guidance images that Apple released alongside iOS 7, the first version of iOS to support hardware game controllers. This is due to the fact that the controller houses a circular D-pad, a pause key, and four action buttons. According to Apple’s documentation, we should also see the controller offer either two or four side buttons, but due to the blurry photograph, it’s hard to tell. This controller also looks to connect to the iPhone via a Lightning connector. Kotaku has also noted that Apple will not likely be producing its own controller. However, companies like iFrogz have already announced controllers that will take advantage of the new API. These companies will likely refine their announced controllers before release in order to be certified by Apple. We should see these controllers and others launch around the time iOS 7 hits public release. Via: The Verge Continue reading →

TweetDeck 3′s All New Look Now Available For Mac
TweetDeck recently updated its Windows, Chrome and web apps and now the new version is available for the Mac. The update gave the app a whole new look , with a redesigned navigation bar on the left, as well as a new translation feature and the options to add a “Followers” column that shows a bio of everyone that follows you. The new sidebar, which was previously at the top, gives you easy access to items like your columns, lists and the settings. From there, you can also create a new tweet, as well as conduct searches. Now at the top of the side bar you’ll see the New Tweet button. When you click this, you’ll open the familiar New Tweet window. The Search button falls just under that, which opens the Search window when selected. The next few icons represent the columns that you have in your TweetDeck, which you can roll over to see the full title. You can click on a column icon to display it, which is a great feature if you have a lot of columns. The column icons will scroll up and down in the sidebar so you can see them all no matter how many or few you have, or how big or small your screen is. To reorder your columns, just drag a column icon up or down to wherever you want it to be. Searching in TweetDeck is more powerful than ever. You can filter column search results by the minimum number of retweets, favorites, and replies. A similar filtering function is available for interactions, which lets you filter them for mentions, retweets, favorites, followers or lists. Underneath the column icon you’ll notice the “Add column” icon, and underneath that you’ll see the last three icons: Expand navigation, Lists, and Settings. The newly designed TweetDeck is available for your Mac on the Map App Store now and can be downloaded for free. Image Credit: Continue reading →

MTV 2.0 For iOS Lets You Watch Full Videos Of All Your Favorite Reality Shows
MTV ‘s iOS app has been completely redesigned from the ground up. Previously known as the MTV WatchWith app, the app has hit version 2.0 and will now be known simply as MTV. With the rebranding of its name, MTV 2.0 brings some significant new features. MTV WatchWith was more of a viewing companion, and not an app that you can actually watch full episodes on in the past. But, that all changes with MTV 2.0, which lets you watch full episodes of your favorite MTV shows, like “Awkward,” “Real World,” “Teen Wolf,” “Teen Mom,” and “Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life.” The only catch with watching full episodes is that you can only do so if your TV provider is supported by the app. As of now, the app supports these providers: AT&T U-verse, Bright House Networks, Cablevision (Optimum), DIRECTV, Hawaiian Telecom, RCN, Suddenlink, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon FiOS. You can also access bonus content from MTV shows, MTV News, MTV Style, MTV Movies, MTV Geeks, MTV Hive and MTV Other. The app will still function as a second-screen app while watching your favorite shows on Music Television. It also lets you check out photos, participate in polls and quizzes, read behind-the-scenes information, and find new songs from all the MTV shows you watch. And you can still chat with friends through the supported Facebook chats and Twitter feeds. MTV 2.0 is now available for download from the App Store for free. Continue reading →

Apple Again Considering Bigger iPhone Screens, Cheaper Models In Different Colors?
We’ve heard it before and now we’re hearing it again. According to Reuters this morning , Apple is considering launching iPhones with 4.7–inch and 5.7-inch displays, as well as cheaper models in different color options. In the history of the iPhone, Apple has only had two screen sizes for the iPhone, 3.5-inch and 4-inch displays, but now Apple is reportedly “considering” expanding this change up. Note the “considering.” During his appearance at D11 this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted that Apple is open to the idea. He said a larger screen “comes with a lot of trade-offs,” but that “doesn’t shut off the future.” Now, it looks like Apple might be coming around to that idea again as the company looks to compete with Samsung in a new arena: the “phablet” sphere. Apple is reportedly looking at launching two bigger iPhones next year: a 4.7-inch device and a 5.7-inch device, and the company has apparently already approached suppliers about their plans. It’s still unclear, however, if Apple will actually launch larger-screened iPhones. Apple’s larger 4-inch iPhone 5 is the company’s first step towards a larger iPhone, but it’s still one of the smaller screens out in the market, especially compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2, with 5-inch and 5.5-inch screens, respectively. Perhaps more likely, at this point, is a cheaper iPhone model for those who are a bit more money-conscious, which is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 5S with its new fingerprint technology. The cheaper model is expected to be made of plastic, much like the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Apple plans, apparently, to dress it in different colors and it would host older internals to keep costs low. Reuters says the device could sell for $99. The iPhone 5S and cheaper iPhone model are expected to launch this fall. Problem is, on contract, Apple already offers phones for free. No one ever seems to mention that in these damn “cheaper” iPhone articles. Image Credit: CuttingLet Continue reading →

Rovio Teases ‘Angry Birds Go!’
Rovio has just published a new promotional webpage for Angry Birds Go! , an upcoming game in the Angry Birds line. Upon loading the promotional page, you’re greeted with what looks to be an Angry Bird racing through a wooded course. After that, you’re brought to a page that shows the Angry Birds Go logo and string of text that reads “Something new is coming.” The official Angry Birds Twitter account tweeted a similar graphic earlier today. Judging by the short video, we’re guessing that Angry Birds Go will be some sort of first-person racing game. This is due to the fact that the video opened up with “Ready, Set, Go!” and that the video showed a bird flying at high-speeds through what looked to be a race course. Only time will tell. Angry Birds is one of the post popular games in the mobile gaming market. Published by Rovio Mobile, the game is based on a group of birds that had their eggs stolen by a group of pigs. The birds launch themselves at the pigs using a slingshot in the game to destroy them and, in the end, regain their eggs. Rovio has published multiple iterations of Angry Birds including Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Star Wars, and Angry Birds Seasons. However, all of these games have remained relatively the same but feature different skins and slightly different physics, so it’ll be interesting to see what Rovio has in store with the all new Angry Birds Go. iOS 7, And OS X 10.9 Support Game Controllers With New API
Every year at WWDC features fly under the radar because Apple doesn’t have enough time to discuss them all. One interesting feature that was mentioned on a slide but not discussed further was game controllers , which will be supported on iOS 7 and OS X 10.9. Playing traditional console style games on a touchscreen has always been difficult, especially when the developer has not tailored their game enough to a touchscreen. Now gamers do not have to worry about that problem if their favorite games support Apple’s game controllers API. There are two different types of controllers that Apple showed on its developer site. One is a typical gamepad with joysticks, while another controller fits around the screen. Previous attempts at adding controller support to iOS was done by multiple companies, including the ION iCade Mobile and the Duo Gamer . Unfortunately they didn’t provide a common way to support each other. So for instance one controller would support a particular number of games, while another controller would have its own library. This lead to fragmentation. Apple will have one way of adding support for controllers though, which eliminates that issue as long as everyone supports Apple’s method. This is a great feature addition and if Apple ever provides an Apple TV SDK, controller support could move there too and compete with micro consoles like the OUYA and Project M.O.J.O. iOS 7 Activation Lock Has Lawmakers Cautiously Optimistic
Yesterday, Apple announced that it is stepping up theft prevention with iOS 7 with Activation Lock. This feature will not allow iOS devices with Find My iPhone activated to have the service deactivated without first entering the Apple ID and password associated with the device. This feature addition seems like a direct response to lawmakers who have proposed that mobile phone manufacturers add a “kill switch” to mobile phones so they can be remotely deactivated in the case of theft. After these lawmakers heard about Apple’s move to help prevent iPhone theft, they seem to be optimistic about Apple’s move , but have insisted that they “reserve judgment” on the feature until its functionality is understood. According to SeattlePi , San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman have said the following on Activation Lock in a join statement: We are appreciative of the gesture made by Apple to address smartphone theft. We reserve judgment on the activation lock feature until we can understand its actual functionality. These lawmakers are set to meet with representatives from Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, and Google on Thursday to discuss implementation of a remote kill switch that would render stolen devices useless. Smartphone theft has been a huge issue over the past few years. With more and more smartphones and tablets going into the hands of users, we are also seeing more and more theft of these devices in cities throughout the world. For instance, mobile phone thefts make up 40% of all theft in New York City . Heck, 70% of all smartphones stolen on NYC subways and buses are iPhones. Continue reading →

Will Your Mac Support OS X Mavericks? Here’s A List Of Supported Machines
At WWDC yesterday, Apple unveiled its new OS X update, Mavericks, which is doing away with the familiar cat names we’ve all come to know and love and embracing a new naming convention. One thing Apple forgot to mention, though, is which Macs would support the new operating system. Fortunately, AppleInsider did some sleuthing and discovered which Macs will support OS X Mavericks. Supported Macs include: iMac (Mid-2007 or later) MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later) MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later) MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later) Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later) Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later) Xserve (Early 2009) Your Mac will also need to be running Mac OS X 10.6.7 Snow Leopard or higher with 8GB of free disk space for installation. This is basically the same requirements that were needed to install Mountain Lion, so if you were able to run that on your Mac, Mavericks is pretty likely to be supported as well. Continue reading →

You Can Finally Block Unwanted Calls And Messages With iOS 7
Telemarketers got you down? There’s nothing worse than answering a phone call only to find out it’s a telemarketer and then you’re stuck on the phone until you can cut them off to say you’re not interested. With iOS 7, you won’t have to worry about this anymore because it’s bringing call-blocking , and not just for phone calls. You’ll also be able block numbers in FaceTime and Messages. As part of a press release detailing everything you can expect in iOS 7, Apple revealed that call-blocking will be one of the new features you’ll be able to enjoy. “Phone, FaceTime and Messages blocking to prevent specific people from being able to contact you.” With call-blocking in iOS 7, you’ll be able to block specific numbers, so when you’re tired of turning your ex down for the hundredth time or you’re just trying to avoid someone, you can easily block their numbers so you won’t have to bother with them anymore.
